New best answer to WDYHAG (Why do you have a gun?)

Are you a Police Officer?

No.

Then why do you have a gun?

This is my helicopter lure.

Same thing over at Fair Oaks Mall in Fairfax. Nothing posted at the entrances, but while OCing there today was approached by mall security and, after they learned I was not a LEO, was asked to leave. Thought it was interesting though, as a few people have posted here that they have carried in fair oaks without incident. I guess your results may vary....

I think it's just certain guards at Fair Oaks.

I've only OC'd there a couple of times, though I used to work across the street. I carried a couple of times after another poster was challenged there.

Nothing is posted.

That would make sense. I suppose I was just "fortunate" enough to run into one of the ones who did want to make an issue of it. It is interesting to note though, that when I mentioned to him that there was no posted sign on the entrances regarding prohibition of firearm carry, he radioed back to the security office to check with his supervisor. When he told the supervisor that I had said there was no sign prohibiting firearms in the mall, he got this sort of exasperated tone to his voice as he rattled off that while there was no posted signs, mall pilocy still forbids the carrying of weapons in ther mall. Sounds like he's had people point out the lack of signage to him before. Wonder if they will be posting anything ever?

Ah well, just have to get my CHP so that I can carry my Glock without shattering mall security's self-delusion that they are the ones keeping me safe.

Another fun OC moment.

I opened carried into a Northern Virginia McDonalds for lunch today.

I had to wait for another fella to finish at the condiment counter. He looked over his shoulder and asked ifhe was in my way. I smiled and said I'd wait my turn. He playfully said, "Oh no. I don't want to hold you up. I saw what you're carrying. I don't want to get shot!" Or words to that effect.I smiled and told him I was pretty tame. Weboth ended off with a chuckle.

I'm convinced the vastmajority of peopleare not unnerved by a citizen OC'ing. I've had way too many pleasant, positive, or even humorous encounters.

Seems like every story you tell, people are telling you they don't want to get shot...

Well, they WILL post if people keep using the "There's no sign" tactic.
That's possible.

I used to enter through the Macy's nearest the Walkoveryou bank. Unless that Macy's posted, I'd figure to be home free even if the main mall entrances were posted.

Had I been challenged, my plan was to say "Oh. Thank you. I didn't know that. I'll finish my business and be off, then."

Mayday,

There are signs at the entrances. The dual doors (where you walk through one set of doors then another), if you look to the right or left there is a small sign that is less than 8.5''x11''.

The writing is extremely small and is a pathetic display of what you "agree" to on entering the property.

it is there on almost every entrance, there are a few that don't have it.

Well technically, western Prince William County is not part of Northern Virginia, but the reality is who would know.

Anyway, I've been managing to OC all over the place; Manassas, western end of the county, and Fairfax. I have yet to have a negative experience, but when gassing up my car this afternoon, I got my first noticeable gawk. Two people, a man and a woman, were filling their tank at the pump across the island from me. The woman was in the driver's seat and the man was doing the fillup. The woman noticed me first and stared as I went in to pay before fueling. When I went back out to my car, she was obviously motioning/saying something to her counterpart to the affect of "did you see that?". I didn't actually hear anything, but the expressions and looks seemed to indicate something along those lines. Car was out of state, too.

First time.

Congrats! You just gave two people an experience that may profoundly effect their outlook on rights. You showed them a citizen responsibly carrying a firearm.

I was OC'ing in Thai Nakorn restaurant as I went in to pick up some take-out chow this evening, and some folks were sitting in a booth as I walked up to the register and ordered. Out the corner of my eye I could see them glancing my way, and the one guy closest to me was keeping eye on me. They looked like 50-somethings, with money, judging by the clothes and haircuts. Possibly the type of people who have the Fairfax supervisor (Jerry Connely, I believe) on speed dial.

I always wonder what happens after an encounter like that. Does that guy take note and decide to try and raise hell about it later?Did his eyes open to the freedom he didn't know we have, maybe? Did he just shake his head and forget about it?

Anyway, the girl at the counter was cute so I wasn't really watching the guy so much...

You know, I didn't notice the license plate until they were driving away so I did not get a chance to get the state name.

A few months ago at that same gas station, a middle aged couple from Colorado approached me as wanted directions to Dulles airport (this was from the Somerset/Gainesville area). They were basically unfamilar with this area, so I took my time and really gave them the easiest and best directions possible. I was OC'ing the entire time. Not a word or a look from either of them.

OC'ed in the Stafford DMV office this morning. MAN! Was that place crowded! The guard was on the door admitting people into the place as others were leaving. If no one left, then no one came in. Waited outside for about 20 minutes before I was allowed in. Seemed like one third of the customers were hispanic/latino.

Any how, no problems experienced there with my OC.

What percentage were White, Asian, Black, Native American or other? I just don't see how that matters.

I OC'd at Los Tios Restaurant on Mount Vernon Ave in Alexandria accross the street from Mount Vernon Community School on Saturday evening without a problem. An older couple sat near us and the husban leaned over slighty and looked at my pistol and then he pointed it out to his wife who was not subtle at all as she turned all the way around just to look but nothing else. I carried on about my business and enjoyed my dinner with my wife and kids.
