I have been referred to at various times as a redneck; sometimes derogatorily, other times not. I wasn't raised in this country and when one was called a redneck it simply meant someone who did manual labor for a living. That could range from farming/ranching to working on the roads or railroads or in sawmills. Work of this type commonly meant sunburn on the back of the neck, hence "redneck". It had nothing to do with being rural or uneducated. When we say we are proud, or at least not ashamed, to be known as a redneck it means we are unconcerned with labels others put on us. Labelling only shows the arrogance and ignorance of the labellers.
Now, can we go get a cup of Starbucks?
