18 years of age is the lawful age to possess a firearm without restrictions.

So that's my short answer.

Watch for the UFO.
You can carry a firearm (long gun only) at 17 while hunting.

Wouldn't hunting be a restriction on the lawful possession?

And, isn't 16 the minimum age while hunting?

The age depends upon many things. Please see the following link: http://mi.gov/dnr/0,1607,7-153-10363_39267-32244--,00.html

I am also unaware of any statute that states you have to be 18 to possess a long gun. I know of a anecdote from up state where a 12 year old and 17 year old were OCing long guns (walking) into their small town and went to the grocery store to buy pop and some junk food. The local LEO stopped by and told the people in the area that it was lawful.

So if someone can find a statute other than hunting where a long gun is restricted to 18 and above I would like to know about it.

Of course handguns are covered under statute for 18 yearsand older.

You are most welcome. I have teenage children and have looked into this a few times now. The DNR seems to change this every so often, it should be easier than it is currently is to figure out:

Hunting Only (my initial stab at it):
10-11: Use a Bow
12-15: Firearm on Public/Private Land with parental supervision
16-17: Firearm on Public Land with parental supervision, Private Land on their own
18: No possession and usage restriction, other than established seasons (which I think need work)

Thanks, PDinDetroit, for the cite that clarifies what I intended in my short answer as the "unrestricted possession" of a firearm by a person 18 years of age and older.

Thanks for posting the statute. There is a hunting exception of 17 years of age.

They can posses a long gun under supervision of someone 18 and older. So the story of the two boys up north is either not true or the local LEO was wrong. They would have had to have someone 18+ with them.

750.234f Possession of firearm by person less than 18 years of age; exceptions; violation as misdemeanor; penalty.

Sec. 234f.

(1) Except as provided in subsection (2), an individual less than 18 years of age shall not possess a firearm in public except under the direct supervision of an individual 18 years of age or older.

(2) Subsection (1) does not apply to an individual less than 18 years of age who possesses a firearm in accordance with part 401 (wildlife conservation) of the natural resources and environmental protection act, Act No. 451 of the Public Acts of 1994, being sections 324.40101 to 324.40119 of the Michigan Compiled Laws, or part 435 (hunting and fishing licensing) of Act No. 451 of the Public Acts of 1994, being sections 324.43501 to 324.43561 of the Michigan Compiled Laws. However, an individual less than 18 years of age may possess a firearm without a hunting license while at, or going to or from, a recognized target range or trap or skeet shooting ground if, while going to or from the range or ground, the firearm is enclosed and securely fastened in a case or locked in the trunk of a motor vehicle.

So as you have stated, that an exception exists for the purpose of hunting, would this not be a restriction on the OC of a firearm for someone not 18 years of age?

And as such, wouldn't my short answer, that 18 years of age is the lawful age to possess a firearm without restrictions, be accurate?

Actually, if you want to get right down to the nuts and bolts of it, there is no age group that is allowed unrestricted possession of any firearm. We all have restrictions.
