Sounds like a nut tried to do something nutty (a gun grab) and failed. It also appears that the carrier was breaking NM law by his carry.

This was not a successful gun grab. The gun ended up secured in the manager's office until the matter could be straightened out.

Whoops, he done goofed.

Mr. Garcia (Victim) was also arrested as he took his firearm into a licensed liquor establishment which is a felony in New Mexico.
I think that it is absolutely ridiculous that there are laws prohibiting people from taking their weapons into bars.

More:
Good retention huh? Good thing OC grabs never happen...

Still wasn't a "grab".
It didn't work.

Unsuccessful ATTEMPT = FAIL = didn't happen.

So does this mean you are on the side of those who spout the misinformation to oppose OC, or were you just being argumentative ??

What a weird scenario.

Anyway, it reinforces my position that it's best to have openly carried guns in non-paddle holsters with some sort of active retention.

I'd have to disagree on the paddle point. At least with mine, it is very difficult to do if you aren't the one wearing it.

Yep. The only knock on paddle holsters would be that it would somehow be easier to remove than a through-the-belt holster or that it could break. Mine will not break, and even I, with no resistance from myself, have a heckuva time getting it off my belt!

The victim's holster may have been deficient, but not simply because it was a paddle holster.

Another simple technique that could obviate the need for pushing down: Sit so that your weak side is to the aisle, and your strong side is toward the middle of the table, so that there is a trusted person between you and some random nut.

The magazine holder I use for one of my pistols is a paddle holder. I have made a couple of "acrobatic"(not on purpose, I'm too old.) moves with it on and it retains the magazines quite well and takes both hands and 3-4 minutes to take off unless I remove my pants first. Then it still takes both hands and about 2 minutes to take off.

I guess it depends upon which news report you believe and what you define as successful.
One report says the gun fell out of the holster and retreived by a bystander. Going on that it could be argued that it was an unsuccessful grab.
If you go by the other report, the nutcase managed to get the gun and was waving it around before being disarmed. If he was able to gain control and wave it around, I argue that it was a successful grab and could have resulted in disaster.
I am VERY interested in hearing from the OCer in this incident, Garcia. From the videos he appeared to be a large, healthy, well dressed man with a high and tight buzz cut. Was he someone new to OC and didn't know the law against carry in places serving alcohol or was he someone who knew but hoped anyone seeing his pistol would assume from his apperiance that he was a LEO? What make/model of holster was he using? Had he taken any weapon retention training classes before this? So many questions and we can talk about it here all day but without first hand knowledge we are just spitting in the wind.

Apparently he must not have educated himself before going out OCing. We all should inform ourselves of every law in every state we plan to OC or CC in. Luckily, here in KY, the only places we cant OC is federal buildings, courthouses that house only court of justice {if public offices are in the CH they have to let us carry}, detention facilities, k-12 schools and the legislative chambers of the state capitol. open carry is allowed everywhere else, and must be allowed in all state, city and county buildings. We can actually OC more places than CC. I love KY.

Or a simple cop technique I learned the hard way as a wee lad. Drop your elbow into the portion of the hand between the thumb and forefinger. Trust me, they'll let go and they won't try again. This is assuming they've already managed to get their hand on your gun.
