So, does it look like you'll have enough guests at your cookout at this point??

I may be able to show up with a few friends if you need us.

Lots of CCW holders here in the westen mountains. We could have a OC rally here, but other than the tourists, I don't think anyone would notice:lol:

I've seen a few comments about "properly holstered handguns" and no rifles slung over the shoulder, etc.. at the Sunday event, but I haven't been able to find any law that addresses open carry, only concealed. I have a request called in to the Maine law library, but wondering if any of you can delineate what's allowed and what's not when you're openly carrying a weapon. What law addresses the type of holster, for example?? Doesnt open carry mean open carry? Where do these rules come from? THANKS!

Maine is a traditional open carry state. It is perfectly legal and acceptable to carry a firearm openly. However, you may only carry a loaded handgun in a vehicle, openly or concealed, if you have a Maine permit.

If you can't find it doing a quick search I'll help you out more in a few minutes. I have to meet with my adviser to pick classes right now so I can't answer this in depth at the moment, although I'm sure that by the time I get back to this someone will have already answered it for you!

Good thing this is going to be his last term on the city council. I was looking at running for city council this year and was encouraged by other people within the system and told that everybody on the council has a real distaste for him. So he wont be around much longer.

The absence of a law forbidding something, leaves it standing as legal. This is the primary basis for OC. There are some restrictions such as in a vehicle - then only with a Maine permit. The following is a good primer, starting point:
http://www.opencarry.org/me.html

No type or style of holster is spelled out, though most here prefer some kind of retention.

Long guns are not illegal but are beyond the chosen scope of OCDO and such have been requested to NOT be included at the picnic on Sunday. Its a courtesy as a guest type of thing. Perception is after all important.

In a sense, there are no rules on open carry - at least apparently in current Maine statutes because the Maine legislature has not banned open carry or required a permit to open carry.

It is the BBQ organizer who has asked that folks carry handguns responsibly (e.g., in a proper holster) and refrain from long gun carry (not the focus).

I am sorry I have to work, but I know a couple of my friends will be there. PLEASE remember that Dan Skolnik will be doing his best to incite heated words, threatening demonstrations from all and any OCers out there. keep your heads and just smile and know your right and they are not. This guy is on a crucade so don't give him the chance to get a positive highlight reel on the six-o-clock news...have a great day out there!!

Thats why we are going to be warm and fuzzy! haha... I think that we've got a pretty good group of guys heading over sunday. I know that i'll stay calm no matter what happens, people around campus have already put that to the test. Hopefully everyone else will be calm, cool, collected and charismatic! Smile at all the people who think they are right even though they don't have any facts or statistics to back their position up! Perhaps I should print out a small informational flier? I think i'm going to do that.

I have a friend who wants to wear his "Ted Kennedy's car has killed more people than my rifle" teeshirt, would that be in bad taste do you think? Just want to be sure... before he shows up in it.

hahaha, personally I think that it's funny and that it's his first amendment. I say go for it. The "anti's" are going to have signs and noise-makers so it's whatever.
