Vacation

My wife and I went camping in Wayne National Forest, near Wheelersburg OH for 5 days. OC'd on the way there, stopped at a Wendy's in Orange Oh and several other areas and rest stops geocaching. No looks or comments.

At the park I had to CC as the law indicates it as I read it:
36 CFR 2.4 (h) Notwithstanding any other provision in this Chapter, a person may possess, carry, and transport concealed, loaded, and operable firearms within a national park area in accordance with the laws of the state in which the national park area, or that portion thereof, is located, except as otherwise prohibited by applicable Federal law.
So CC'd to be on the safe side.

In Wheelersburg OH, OC'd at Walmart, Kroger, Long John Silvers, McDonalds, and Subway. Plus went to about 11 places to geocache and only disarmed at the two areas that were church property (wasn't sure about OC or CC with a CPL there). No issues at all.

On the way home OC'd and stopped at several places for more geocaching, Only one comment at a rest area. Older man walked past me, saw my side arm, snorted, shook his head and said "unbelievable". I just snorted, shook my head and said "typical". :p Besides that no issues.

So all in all a very relaxing and enjoyable vacation made even more so with no issues about my sidearm.

I'm a little confused, by the cite of the law it says you can CC in the area, but doesn't say you can't open carry. Is that against the Ohio law in the National Parks?

No it doesn't but didn't want to become a test case either. It could read either way.

I OC all the time...Meijer, Wal-mart, Petco, Kroger, Pet Supplies Plus, Bookstores, garage sales, restaurants, Secretary of State, the Mall... almost never any issues or anyone noticing.

Anyways, a few of the other than normal experiences:

Was at a garage sale looking at some stuff for about 10 minutes - no issues, a bunch of neighborhood kids playing in the yard. As I was getting into my car and leaving one of the kids was saw it and was asking (very loudly for all his friends I'm sure) "Is that a gun?" To which I answered positively, at which point he kept saying over and over "He's got a gun!" - he didn't seem to be scared, but it was obvious he had never seen a civilian carrying before. I was already getting into my car, so I really didn't bother much with it.

Yesterday at Kroger had one of the baggers ask about my firearm and inquire as to the model etc. No issues.

Also yesterday was picking up food at the Chinese restaurant and had a fellow approach me and ask about my firearm. He was from Tennessee, but was living in MI for a while while he worked for GM. He had lots of questions about OC and said he would have had he known it was legal. I told him to make sure he knew all the laws first and directed him to this website. Very nice fellow! I really wish I had not ran out of tri-folds!!

Haven't posted in a while but have been OC'ing everywhere without incident. Getting real comfortable walking into Eastpointe City offices while OC, done it 3 times now and nothing made of it. OC'ed 3 times at Normandy Optical in Eastpointe, they are definitely getting used to seeing me carry in there. Carried at my dentist office for the first time last month, no problems, no remarks. Will be interested to see when I go back in September for my crown if they have anything posted or if they are 2A friendly. Went camping a little ways up north 2 weekends ago and saw a no weapons sign as we were arriving. Too bad for them, it wasn't posted on their website and I wasn't about to drive 3 hours back home at midnight. Just kept it locked up the whole weekend. Won't be going back there again. Otherwise, OC'd all the usual spots, no problems, a few friendly encounters at which I passed out trifolds.

Burger King on Waverly between Michigan and St Joe in Lansing today...something a little out of the ordinary happened.

a special needs woman along with her caretaker was behind me in line when suddenly she yells out at the top of her voice "hey that dude has got a gun!" (attracting full attention of the 30 or so people there) caretaker tries to get the woman to quiet down..then she yells out again(slightly quieter this time), "What? thats pretty cool!" i chuckled a bit at that.nobody else said anything and after a few seconds all forgot it ever happened.

Also carried at Game Hits in Lansing...guy there helped me track down some hard to find games ive been looking for, Gander Mountain and Autozone, without issues.

btw, dont buy guns at that gander mountain....$599 for a beat up WASR that didnt even have the tapco trigger group, threaded barrel or bayo lug($350-$450 anywhere else)...and $280 for a poorer condition Mosin 91/30(usually in the $80-$140 range anywhere else)

OC'd in a lot of different places in Michigan and Indiana. No issues anywhere. Some looks but mostly in Michigan. People in Indiana don't notice or care.

This afternoon moments after disembarking from my vehicle an unmarked DPD drove down my street, the LEO saw me OCing, slowed down, leaning out the window with a huge sh!t eating grin on his face asked: "Man I bet you never get messed with down here do you?" Smiling wryly, I replied "No, I don’t." The LEO then continued on his way. (LEO presence has been heavy the last few days in my neighborhood, I understand they’re looking for a particular bad guy.)

OCed yesterday at Walmart in Livoina and on foot in Detroit on Woodward Ave.

While standing in line at Walmart this middle-aged woman turns to me and says, "I’m going to behave now since you’ve got this." while pointing at one of my pistols. I laughed and replied "Well, you know what they say, an armed society is a polite society." In Detroit, while walking to the mailbox on Woodward, a middle aged black woman was so intrigued by the sight of me OCing (with the DPD sitting a mere block away) she pulled over her vehicle to ask me a few questions about "How are you doing that?" "Is it loaded?" I gave her the uber quick roadside version of OCing. Doom on me for not having any trifolds.

Have not posted here in quite awhile, we put our house up for sale and it sold the first day, full asking price! This turned into a made dash over the next 4 weeks to find our next house (in the Dundee area) in that time I OC'd everywhere I went including all the houses we looked at, the mortgage people, the builder (we are buying a house under construction) various fast food joints, home improvement stores, church, and everywhere in between. No issues anywhere, a few looks but that's all. I am surprised our Realtor never said anything! Now begins more insanity of preparing to move, hopefully only one time!

Oced all day in St. Joseph at the lest we forget beach landing reinactment. Cops all over the place and not a single issue. One thanks for exercising my rights from a fellow citizen.

Hello all! My name is Matt and I am from the Commerce area. Still waiting for my CPL to get here so I decided that I would open carry until then. I've been doing a lot of reading and studying in regards to the laws and statutes that need to be known before OC'ing. I recently purchased a lovely Sprinfield XD SC. I love this thing.

Today I decided to OC and take it slow. I had one great experience and one poor experience.

Good:

Went to Gander Mountain in Novi to see if they had the Blackhawk Serpa 2 holster in stock. While I was at work I was on their site and knew that they fully support both OC and CC of their patrons so this was not a concern. I went to the store and holstered my weapon after unlocking it from my trunk. Walked in making sure that no ill conceived manager put a sign up or anything. Walked to the firearms department to search for the holster. Had no looks of terror as this is Gander Mountain ;) . A sales rep asked if I needed any help and I inquired about the holster. Unfortunately they did not have it in stock so I thanked him for his help and just browsed around looking at some other stuff. Went to my car and locked the firearm back up.

Bad:

After Gander Mountain I thought that Dicks Sporting Goods in Fountain Walk might have the holster I'm looking for. I unlocked my firearm and holstered in. Before walking in I scanned their doorway for any notice or sign that states that firearms are not allowed to be OC or CC. There were none. However they are having a 4th of July sale! Walked in with no issue. Went up the escalator to the firearm area. Not lingering around or browsing as I was walking directly to there. I browsed around and quickly came to the conclusion that they do not even have any holsters. Walked straight back to the escalator. As I was walking back out towards the exit the door greeter had stopped me and asked if I found what I was looking for. I kindly informed them that I did not. (Mind you this is the same door greeter that I walked passed as I was walking in). He asked what I was looking for and I let him know. He then noticed that I was OC'ing. He told me that this was not allowed by store and company policy. I stated that I did not see a sign on the door and that OC was legal in Michigan to anyone who is legally allowed to posses a firearm. He said I was absurd and that he didn't think that it was true. "There would be some sever security issues if we just let anyone walk into our store with a weapon. The customers would be scared". I kindly smiled and informed him that a law abiding citizen would not OC a firearm to invoke fear but to exercise their right. A criminal that is concealing when not allowed is what you would need to worry about. He asked me to leave the store. I kindly obliged and let him know that I was on my way out regardless. This just gives me another reason not to go there. Not only are the rpices absurd but the way the situation was handled by whom I assume a kid that just graduated high school.

Anyhow, even though I had one bad experience this will not stop me from OC'ing. It will stop me from giving Dicks Sporting Goods my business though!

I look forward to OC events as well as learning and contributing to the forums!

Cheers!

i "think" dicks is OC friendly. i think you just got an ignorant employee. they may have been confused about the employee and customer policy. i know that at dunhams employees can't carry, but they allow customers to.
