Hello all,

I go to school in Charlottesville and am new to OC. Anybody have any experience/thoughts on OCing in cville? I know the town is very liberal and I have only heard horror stories about OCing in the area.

Also, anybody know of a good place to shoot and to buy .45ACP ammo? The only place that I have had any luck is High-Tech Outdoors and Archery off of Richmond Rd...

There's a nice indoor range in Cville some where, don't know the name, I'm not in the area.... There's also another thread that has many stories and posts just for the Cville area on this forum. You'll have to do a search, should be easy to find.

BTW, welcome to OCDO. You'll find a lot of good things here.

Hite Hollow is about an hour away, I love it there. Free public outdoor range.

There is a range in town about 5 minutes away from UVa grounds. It's private, but I think $100 a year to join. I haven't gone through the process yet, but plan on joining.

http://www.rrpc.org/ is the club.

http://www.fs.fed.us/r8/gwj/dryriver/recreation/shooting_ranges/hite_hollow.shtml hite hollow.

I only OC'd in Charlottesville on the 4th of July last year. It's too hard for me to avoid grounds and since I am an employee and student at UVa, I'd get expelled if I OC on school property.

EDIT*

For ammo there is a gun store on 29, a Dicks across the street, and a Walmart a little down the road. I don't support Dicks anymore for their store policy on selling rifles, the local gun store is ok, but they are rude and have high prices. Walmart usually is very cheap for winchester white box, but the past few weeks have been COMPLETELY out of stock.

Yeah, I've checked out Dicks and Walmart on numerous occasions and every time I swing by or call, they are out of stock. And thanks for the shooting range links. I'll have to check them out.

I am a UVa student also and the no weapons policy on school property makes OCing very inconvenient and almost a guessing game. Whenever I run errands or go out for some reason, I am almost always cutting through grounds. If I were to get pulled over for some reason and was caught OCing, I'm guessing that would be game over for me as a student? Places like the corner seem to be gray areas as I don't know if OCing as a student is prohibited there or not... :banghead: thoughts?

I have never had any problems OCing around C'ville. You shouldn't have any problems Ocing as a student as long as you aren't on grounds. Everything on the corner should be off grounds.

I've open carried a few times when I've had to go somewhere in Charlottesville. The only problem I've ever had was at Wal-Mart. You can look up my does anyone have the number for Wal-Mart corporate if you want the details.

I've also visited the Woodbrook Gun shop. Not sure of the official name. Isn't it like the Woodbrook Sports and Pro Shop or something? Never open carried their. However, I've had horrible experiences with that place when it comes to customer service. They are rude, they have extremely high prices on most things I've looked at. Not all but most, if you have a problem with what you buy their don't expect good service. I've posted my experience with them several times also. One of their employees I've dealt with was really nice and friendly and if he owned a shop I'd gladly buy from him. However, it's the owner I've had issues with. I would not recommend this place at all.

I'm not sure of any other gun shops in the Charlottesville area but their may be more I'm not sure. Well, I take that back there is Dicks. I'm not familiar with the rest of them.

I open carry all the time in Charlottesville. You name the place and chances are that I have open carried there. Never an issue with anyone, including the Charlottesville PD. Even on the Mall during their "Fridays after Five" deal. I don't know about the horror stories that you have heard, but no one ever bothers me. I just don't carry in places that firearms are not permitted.

it was told to me by a co worker of mine. i don't know if it will be concealed or open carry. i wish it would happen. that is my biggest fear about going to work up there. they have the new warning siren, and the text message alerts, you can't hear the siren, and half the grounds have good cell service to receive the alerts. i have e mailed the siren test people and told them what i thought. no response. i have my concealed permit and i know alot of other staff have it also.

We should set up a cville OC dinner, seeing as how there's onlylie 4 of us, it shouldn't be too hard.

I can predict the outcome of such a meet & greet dinner. :D

Chief Longo will receive a call/complaint asking how 4 plain clothes cops can sit around for 2 hours eating while the criminals roam the street mugging people. The chief won't know what to say! When he asks around and never receives what he considers to be the truth "the truth" from his troops, he will distrust them!

Oh the wonderful Chief Longo... I dated his son's ex a few years ago, we never saw eye to eye, haha.

I have friends in the city police department, I'll ask how they feel about open carry.

Positive OC encounter at the Country Store convience store/Shell station at Rt. 29 and Greenbrier Rd., just north of the 29 bypass.

The middle-aged woman who rang up my purchased asked about my gun. Fifteen minutes of pleasant conversation occurred. I was able to bring her up to speed on CHP application requirements and left her with aVCDL card about VA guns laws.

So does anybody in Cville actually do OC dining as a group... If not lets get it together. I haven't seen anybody else here OC. I've only had one LE ask to see my permit and heard a few people mumble some things to their friends. I don't know why more people don't do it.
