I lost two of my computers ####, #### ######-######!! My computer guy, (who will probably be paying his building rent with my bill this month), says he has had 12 or so computers this week, with the same thing. He said coincidentally, that Weau tv 13, and/or Leader Telegram may have been the infectors.

I had to call Microsoft yesterday and it cost me $104.00 to remove this infection.
It kept me from doing alot of functions and I didn't even open it up.

I am seeing "Windows 7 Antispyware 2012" it was a real SOB to kill and remove, so be careful.

The first thing it does is shuts down Microsoft security essentials, it starts is a prompt to update a java program, SO DO NOT UPDATE JAVA, you're allowing the virus by doing that.

PM me if you need more help removing this crap./

That's your problem right there. Using Microsoft Security Essentials..... Need I say more.

Quoted for emphasis. The ONLY virus I've ever had to deal with, aside from the merely annoying malware, the only virus that ever required a format/reinstall to correct, was using Microsoft Security Essentials. I dumped MSE like the turd it is and bought Kaspersky. I've been very happy with it.

People more likely to lie when texting.

http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/technology/2011/12/people-more-likely-to-lie-when-texting-study.html

http://www.physorg.com/news/2011-12-people-texting.html
The study, led by Asst. Prof. David Jingjun Xu of Wichita State University, will appear in the March edition of the Journal of Business Ethics

http://www.sauder.ubc.ca/Faculty/People/Faculty_Members/Cenfetelli_Ronald
Refereed Journal Publications: Xu, J., Cenfetelli, R.T., and Aquino, K. (2011), "The Influence of Media Cue Multiplicity on Deceivers and Those Who Are Deceived." forthcoming at Journal of Business Ethics

Abstract

We extend prior research of deceitful behavior by studying the reactions of those who are targets of deception and how a specific attribute of communication media, cue multiplicity , influences such reactions. We report on a laboratory experiment involving dyads asked to engage in a stock share purchase exercise. We find that when a broker is perceived to act deceitfully by the buyer, the buyer reacts with negative affect (anger) which provokes subsequent acts of revenge against the broker. Importantly, we find that media with higher cue multiplicity attenuate buyer anger as well as lessen the propensity for the buyer to seek retaliatory acts of revenge. We further find that moral anger mediates the effect of buyers’ perceived deception on revenge.

OK.. I have Microsoft security essentials... have got the virus while on this site twice in a week... running windows 7... have not clicked to allow any updates either time... What is going on with this site? Luckily I know how to get rid of it... just takes an hour every time. Is there something the admin needs to be doing?

I bet you are not getting rid of it.

There are all sorts of sneaky things they do now. There have been some breeds of virus that wait around and let you think they are gone, then spring up again when you visit a site like a bank or one that has a log in prompt. Try finding a forum you have never been to before, see if it pops up again.

The only way to be sure you cleaned it is to wipe and reinstall from known good media, a.k.a. the "nuke it from orbit" option.

More than likely you are correct that it is not being completely removed. Most of these hide in multiple places waiting to be brought up again may times embedded in system files that may not be used very often. MSE and other virus protection programs will only respond to a threat when the file is accessed so when it pops up may not have anything to do with what you are doing at the time. I have had MSE to pop up with a warning while the PC was just sitting there with no applications open other than the system programs. Lots of times it pops up while on a site that you actually got the virus/Malware at a totally different time so it make you think that you got it from a site such as this one but did not. The reason I like MSE is that I have found that it recognizes a lot more infections than any other program I have found. I have run scans with others such as Norton that did not find anything but MSE would keep popping up. This is one reason that the developers of malware try to shut down MSE.

MSE does not do as good as some others at cleaning your system as it is focused on live monitoring rather than actual removal. For the actual scanning and removal I have found that Malwarebytes to be the best for that but there are still a lot of these #$@^ things out there that just seem to be immune from everything.

If you get the same one twice in a week more than likely you didn't get it killed the first time and need to get a different treatment going.

There's your problem, you use Norton. I can GUARANTEE you there isno infection on the site itself. I support hundreds of PC's in a Corporate environment and NONE of my PC's report issues with this site. In my environment I run IE 7, 8 and 9 as well as Chrome and Firefox. Various anti-virus software including AVAST, AVG ESET and Symantec Endpoint Security. None of them report problems with this site.

Norton is not the problem

Norton is not the problem. Understanding and accepting what Norton says is the issue.

I see a lot of similarities between this thread and the "Which caliber is better, the 9mm, .40, or the .45" thread. It's pretty funny.

A lot of people have different opinions. Some people swear by Norton, and I've seen it destroy hard drives (brand new system, freshly installed, and Norton ate two hard drives on two different machines). Some people swear by Kaspersky, but I've cleaned infections off of Kaspersky systems too. MSE is in the same boat. Solid AV software, but has issues. There really is no clear cut answer.

All of your AV software is held up by the same thing, updates. Billions of dollars a year are spent on anti-virus programming, and billions more are lost. It's a never ending battle.

My suggestions, if you're still getting the infections, then change to another AV platform. A good friend of mine is going back to school for her medical degree, and has to research some pretty weird stuff (she's going for reproductive specialist, so you can imagine the Google searches that she does). She's been plagued by viruses in the past, until I set her up with Kaspersky 2011 and Firefox with Ad-Block Plus. She's celebrating her first year "virus free" because December 10th was the last time I saw her machine. Saw her yesterday to update to PURE.

Using Ad-Block Plus with Firefox is a free program that blocks a lot of malicious code found in ads, and blocks a lot of ad windows all together. Using plugins with your browser won't affect your AV software either, adding a second layer of protection.

Another thing to do is to shut down all the open ports in your firewall. Most of the minor bugs out there will completely unlock your firewall, allowing more malicious code to get in. If something pops up on your screen, don't click it. Clicking it will ruin an otherwise semi-productive day.

If you're not computer savvy, you can always find people through craigslist to help you out. I ran a pretty decent side business that way for quite a while. Sure, it'll cost you a little bit of money, but it'll save you headache in the long run. As an example, for $100 I would back up your files to disk, clean the infection, and give you your cleaned system plus back up discs. Usually people would pay right away for a new AV program, and I would put Kaspersky on it and let them register it when they got home.

Use common sense when surfing the internet. If you're in to porn, pay for it. Free porn will usually cost you a lot more than the pay sites in the long run. If you download music, use a pay service. Besides being legal, they strive to protect their files. I'm fairly certain that if you get a virus from ITunes, they will happily help you fix it so they can find the problem too. Don't click on "cute" videos that go around the internet. Don't take surveys for a $500 gift card. If you actually ever get the card, you'll use it to fix your machine. Using common sense on the internet is the first step in protecting your information.

I remember when "The Drudge Report" picked up a nasty bug a few years back, and I know a lot of people that were infected by it. That bug targeted kernels themselves, and bricked quite a few machines. There was no recovering from that one. Once a bug hits the BIOS of a board, you're pretty much shopping for a new one and using your old computer for target practice at the range.

Now all we need to do is string up the people that write the malicious code for fun, and we can all get back to the really important issues at hand like coast-to-coast constitutional carry.

Y'all reporting difficulties with this forum/site might look into the ClickJacking/ClearClick protection of your security suite. I had to disable that protection on this trusted site.

Again, not the site itself, it's the ads the site links to. The only thing the forum owners can do is stop using those ads, which means alot of lost revenue. They can report it and nothing else atm.

Also, didn't we say not to use IE?

Read what TaurusToter says above' he speaks truth.
