The virus isn't coming from these forums.

If you've been hit with this infection its from clicking on something you were not supposed too. Or you were using Internet Explorer with low security settings.

its definatly coming from these forums.. i have had several warning from my norton and every time is from being on this forum, with no other browsers open. Itss been happening for a week or two now.

Interesting. My Norton doesn't show anything. Only scripts that I block on this site is Facebook and GoogleSyndication. Other than that I run Firefox with AdBlockPlus. I recommend using SuperAntiSpyware in addition to Malwarebytes. I find that typically you need to run several malware scanners in order to find all the infections. When I do this for clients I run a variety of scanners. Also make sure that they are updated and that you run "Complete Scans" This takes longer but it inspects every file rather than just looking in the common locations.

I started writing up a long involved post.

Its not worth it.

Suffice to say.

Take your computer to a tech who knows what he/she is doing if you'd like the infection dealt with, not just something to cover symptoms. Serious Mal-ware is not easy to clean, it can be expensive. (When I do this, I don't even need the entire machine just bring me the HDD. I have a dedicated "hospital machine" specifically for sick HDDs)

Otherwise, nuke and pave (cheaper, quicker option.. Format, reinstall OS) may be a good option. Windows 7 has a non-destructive clean install system that is perfect for this.

This place is clean. The triggers that bring up whatever you are experiencing is coincidence to whatever you have going.

It is not possible in principal to prove the non-existence of something. This is precisely "the Black Swan." In antiquity, white swans were a common premise to Aristotelian syllogisms for there never having been observed black swans until about 1800. To properly prove non-existence, the whole universe of discourse must be observed, all individual birds must be seen to prove that there is no black swan bird. If it turns out that a "black swan" is a frog, well that ends in infinite regression to nonsense.

What ^ said..

Norton is NOT the end-all be-all. Norton is over protective which is not always better. I've had that thing ring alarms when installing new drivers(after which I uninstalled it).. It's clunky, over-protective, and constantly scans everything you do making your pc slower than it should be. Use Avast, AVG, any number of other FREE Anti-viruses. Norton is ****. And for the record, I've been perusing this forum quite a bit over the last month and have not gotten a virus and I don't run ANY active anti-virus, no ad blocker except stock chrome blocking(FYI I've cleaned malware/virus's off that actually mask the icon of the browser you currently use whether it is Firefox, Chrome or IE. Example: on LeftClick icon==launch pop-up spam. vs right click and run as admin does nothing but open the browser as it should), and lastly I DON'T CLICK ON BANNERS/ADS FROM OTHER PAGES BECAUSE IT'S SHINY!!. Therefor most likely the virus you are speaking of is from somewhere else. Oh when visiting a web page yes you download ads before it displays them however those are .gif files 99/100x(if they move else its a .jpeg, png or bitmap) and this site's adds rarely if ever change. So downloading a simple banner on page load would have infected more than a few people if that was the case unless it was being masked by a coded invisible button(basic html) put there by the admins or a very clever programmer who somehow hid the code used in a post.

In closing:
1. Norton==waste of HDD space
2. Don't Blame a site without knowing what your talking about.
3. Yes Chrome/Firefox are better than IE but that doesn't stop a smart programmer from telling the malware to effect your "current default browser" set in winblows.
4. Shiny banner==Bad unless you know the vender the ad came from(even then go to the site directly don't rely on ads).
5. Again do as VW said. Keeping your files on an external is the best way to go. a clean install is always easier than paying money for a pro cleanup job.
6. All of the above is the cost of doing business with Microsoft. If you don't like it get a Mac Or try out a new user friendly distro of Linux like Ubuntu.

Mac OS systems have malware issues of their own. Don't buy into that "they are immune" junk.

(I clean those too, for a modest extra fee)

Right but nowhere near as many issues as winblows. The calls i get from mac users are generally hardware related not infections for the most part.

I forget exactly what the warning said, but it was from norton and it came up several times, and ONLY when I had this site opened. When I noticed this pattern, I tried using only one browser at a time to narrow it ddown, and sure enugh, the warning came up several times again.
I definatly know what im talking about, I dont need to post my credentials here but Im no rookie.
I posted my experience with said virus on this forum to warn or help others who may have had thier computer effected, not to get into a geek argument. Take my advice FWIW.

While it's nice you would post to help others prevent further distress I would suggest unless you have actual symptoms(popups, erratic window behavior, etc) when coming to the site, beside warnings from norton, not to be so sure the site is the culprit vs the often over zealous norton.

I chuckled when you mentioned geek argument. Haha!

Internet Explorer is a Trojan in and of itself. It's so full of security flaws, I refuse to use it. Norton is the same way, IMO. I've often noticed a trend with Norton (and McAfee) that they will find a couple of viruses every once in a while, so you're reminded that they are doing a good job. Once they expire, they hound you for more money to renew your subscription. If you don't, you get 100's of popus claiming infection.

I use Malwarebytes to clean infected computers people bring in, and then I recommend Kaspersky to them. Kaspersky has never let me down, and doesn't destroy system resources in the process

Couple of short tips:

- most people know less than they think, and certainly less than you need to know on this subject (including me), info changes daily. back up your critical files and realize that you'll have to install all your stuff once in a while.
- if you are infected, it is MUCH MUCH faster to just wipe and install. Really, it is.
- stop using Internet Explorer on XP. Just stop. Find another browser you like. IE on XP WILL NEVER BE SECURE no matter what your antivirus is
- get a good ad blocker, AND get a good HOSTS file (http://winhelp2002.mvps.org/hosts.htm)
- chances are it's the ads that are used. it could be another site completely and the thing only pops up when it sees a user login prompt. (I haven't seen any problems. But, I use a blocker and a non-IE browser)
- if you get a pop up saying "you are infected" chances are it's a virus install. (LOOK. READ. DID YOU INSTALL IT? NO? IT BE VIRUS.)
- RIGHT CLICK on the window on the TASK BAR and select CLOSE. If you poke it ANYWHERE on the window it will install.
- when in doubt, yank the power

There are enough zero day exploits in the wild, and enough unpatched computers that really the only problem the bad guys gotta solve is to trick you into visiting their sites. An efficient way to do that is infect low-cost ad-networks.

My staff and I deal with these things constantly and being at a college with both student labs and faculty/staff that do not seem the least bit interested in avoiding viruses/malware as long as we are there to remove it for them I have a lot of experience. My findings are that most of this stuff is inadvertently downloaded by not paying careful attention to the ads or other banners etc. that pop up or appear.

I have found the best AV/MW product is Microsoft Security Essentials but it is far from perfect. Do not use multiple products as the more you have the more they will interfere with each other and prevent each other from doing their job. Run MSE in the background all the time and do a periodic scan with malware anti-bytes. This is the best combination that I have found. If those two do not clean and stop your virus/MW problem then you need to start Googleing anything you can find on your symptoms.

Know the difference between a virus and malware. Some programs are anti-virus but do nothing to protect from malware. Porn sites are not the main culprit as we like to kid about but shopping sites especially those with discount coupons seem to be the main problem. We have removed thousands of viruses and the comment about doing a reformat is not bad advice but does not always work. We had one machine that we thought we had cleaned it and placed it back into service. That same problem popped up later that day. We then reformatted the drive and reinstalled everything. The problem popped up before we even connected it to the network the first time. We then put a new drive in and the malware was still there. All I can come up with is that it had infected the BIOS of the machine.

One final piece of advice; "When you are presented with information on the screen, nothing is too small to be ignored". I have seen a lot of things pop up that if you do not read it carefully you will do just what they want you to. They use very fine print and careful wording to get by the legalities but also confuse the user.
