I am 19 and live in nova. Anyways how would I go about buying a Beretta Px4 9mm and ammo for it? Can you direct me to a non FFL that I could do so? Thanks!!!

Because it seems as though it's engrained in peoples' minds that it's "18 for shotguns/rifles, 21 for handguns" which is true ONLY for purchasing from an FFL.

Of course the above is how it is in VA, other places have further restrictions beyond fed. law.

Figures. My dad won't buy me a handgun because my mom would flip out about it. I guess I'll be talking to my mom a lot about gun safety when I get back from college.:banghead:
You could always just... I dunno, find your own place where you're not subject to parental approval?

I love my parents very much and won't move out until after college. I live on campus anyways at MSU. The problem is being of age to buy the handgun. They want me to wait till I can buy it myself. :/

As long as you're living in their house, it's their rules.

In Virginia it is not as simple as just finding a seller that is not an FFL. In addition to the federallaw prohibiting licenceddealers from selling handguns and ammoto those under 21, Virginia law also makes it illegal to transfer a handgun or ammo toa person they know to be aminor (under 21). . .

§ 18.2-309. Furnishing certain weapons to minors; penalty.

A. If any person sells, barters, gives or furnishes, or causes to be sold, bartered, given or furnished, to any minor a dirk, switchblade knife or bowie knife, having good cause to believe him to be a minor, such person shall be guilty of a Class 1 misdemeanor.

B. If any person sells, barters, gives or furnishes, or causes to be sold, bartered, given or furnished, to any minor a handgun, having good cause to believe him to be a minor, such person shall be guilty of a Class 6 felony. This subsection shall not apply to any transfer made between family members or for the purpose of engaging in a sporting event or activity.

. . . Iwas able to useone of the two exceptions in the law byobtained my handguns by paying my older brother (a family member)for ones that he "Didn't need anymore" after hepurchased new ones.

No, you are incorrect. A minor, for purposes of § 18.2-309is under 18 years of age. That's why gun shows and other private sale opportunities are so vital to those 18-20.

§ 1-207. Child; juvenile; style="BACKGROUND-COLOR: #ffff00"minor[/b]; infant.

"Child," "juvenile," " style="BACKGROUND-COLOR: #ffff00"minor[/b]," "infant," or any combination thereof means a person less than 18 years of age.

(1972, cc. 824, 825, § 1-13.42; 2005, c. 839.)

Well hell, that makes a world of difference;it makes things a lot easier then I thought they were.

My only question is howdo you distinguish between the uses of theterms "minor" and "juvenile"? I believe that I have always heard "minor" used as under 21 and "juvenile" used for under 18. For example: I've heard the term "Possession of alcohol by a minor"used in reference to anyone under 21, and something like "Juvenile court" being for those under 18.

I guess this is what I get for trying to make the law seem like a simple thing that normal people can understand and comply with without getting screwed over.

I read a section on transporting guns if your a minor. It clearly states a minor as someone under 18 years of age:D

So does anyone in nova have a fairly new Beretta PX4 storm 9mm they want to part ways with?

Well, Possession of Alcohol by a Minor simply means that a person under the minimum legal age (21). With firearms laws, it is almost always defined as 18 for being a minor. When talking about the age to purchase handguns from FFLs, they don't use the term "minor", they usually say "under age 21" to make it perfectly clear :)
