Getting home to the southside is a nightmare. Anybody else still sitting in it?

I was. Got off on chester ave, and got back on 664 via terminal avenue. Smooth sailing ever since.

The wife and her friend wanted to go to Busch Gardens for hollowscream. Hopefully it will clear up before we make the treck back to the shore.

I was able to show up a bit late to the picnic around 1:30pm but got to say hi to several people. It was definitely a good turnout this year and not as blazingly hot as past years!

My reason for being late was my daughters competition: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JM1TjlFYWOM&list=UUBGohXVZtPXYF5MCvmTd8fw&index=3&feature=plcp

I mentioned it to a few people and thought to post the video. After the emergency room x-ray she only has a sprain and nothing broken.

Man, do I wish I knew the peninsula like that! I sat in line for an on-ramp for 20 minutes then instead went in Bass Pro and bought a universal charger and watched Netflix on my phone through the worst of it.

Great people as always. I'll be honest, I'm too tired to review, edit, grade and assemble 2 hours of video. I did have an ultra wide (170 degree) lens and an experimental hack on one camera. This is a frame grab of the VCDL BOD meeting after the picnic.

DoubleTap and I thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Was really great seeing everybody - from most every corner off the state too.

The weather was perfect and the food outstanding. Non-stop conversation about experiences, plans for the General Assembly and just simply good brotherhood. We had kids and grand kids, Great Danes + more Danes and a Chihuahua too. Its always great to see a plan come together - kudos to the planners and helpers. We'll be talking about this one for some time to come. The time passed too quickly.

Hopefully Misteer Nap will post some more of his excellent video/photo work in the next few days to share with those who could not attend.

Now I'm going to take my shoes off and kick back. Thanks everyone for a great day.

HAHAAHA LOL!~!! you got off easy!!!!!!!!!! I SAT IN TRAFFIC 4 HOURS ! @_@ I also ran into some guys from the picnic in traffic. :D 4 hours spent on Jeff Ave to the tunnel (monitor merrimac) then it all moved out. From the Shell station to the on ramp south 664 was 40mins...... only 0.6 miles :|
4 hours in traffic and 1 hour to get home. zzzz

I really enjoyed it and thanks to VCDL for hosting.

VDOT; your tax dollars at work.

Enjoyed the picnic; I will say that somebody at VDOT needs to be executed for what happened today. The MMMBT traffic backed up all the way on 664 and up 64 to Hampton Roads Center Pkwy. There was a 10 mile long line for the Jamestown Ferry. My son and I just drove up to 295, over to Hopewell, and back down Rte. 10 to Suffolk, only to find one of the bridges on 17 was one lane only. Pure insanity. I'm sure the papers and news will cover it. Oh, and of course, the predictable car on fire in the MMMBT while the HRBT and JRB were closed....

Great seeing everyone! I decided to take the ferry based on the gloomy reports from the tunnel/bridges. Turned out to be a poor choice as well. It took me over 4 hours to get home what is normally 50 minutes! The good news: no issues riding the ferry while OCing :) I hope to attend the next event.

Long nite!

I've been to three of these picnics, and this was the nicest one yet. Good job!

We tried returning to the Southside out of our way via the ferry, and yes, that was also a nightmare, with three little ones cramped in the back with no supper (thank goodness some of us ate alot at the picnic!). We took our time leaving the peninsula, thinking it would get better as the day progressed. WRONG! We were five and a half hours in ferry traffic by the time we hit the Southside! Get this--when we neared the Jamestown ferry area, the cops directed ALL the traffic into the now-abandoned old campground site there and we were all required to drive in a large cow pasture in a large CIRCLE formation, kind of like "circling the wagons" in the high grass over rough ground before we got to re-enter Rt. 31 and proceed to the ferry. WHAT WAS THAT? The cops said we're getting traffic off the road. I hope I did not pick up a nail in my tire there in the weeds! The term "goat-roping" comes to mind over this whole fiasco! If some one HIGH UP in VDOT is not fired for this debacle I want to know why not. If they had simply chosen to limit traffic on one of the bridge projects in the opposite direction, I believe this would have been much better, but no, they decided to block traffic in the SAME direction on both bridges. AND, there were idle ferries sitting in the docks, last night, NOT running at all, while the traffic was backed up for miles, literally! Ferry worker told me they only decided to run the one extra ferry that afternoon, as in they did not plan extra capacity there either, in advance, and people had to be called in to come work the crisis. I see now that Rt. 17 bridge in Suffolk was also closed to one lane as well. THIS, is your government, at work.

Stayed late at the picnic for the board meeting, then did some visiting, after which took a leisurely drive via Rt. 60 back to Richmond. Got home in just over an hour and a half and had only a sore back about which to complain. <ducks and runs>

Certainly VDOT's planning and scheduling of bridge repairs leaves much to be desired. Sorry that you had to contend with those problems after such a nice day. :(

Had a good time and good food. The wife and her friend decided they wanted to go to Busch Gardens for Howl-O-Scream while we were over there. Left Busch Gardens at 8 and spent 3 hours getting to 264. Got home around quarter to 1 this morning. Heads need to roll at VDOT.

i'm now kicking my self for skipping the last one.

it was great to have a nice day at the park with like-minded americans.
i'm sure i'll forget the names/faces by the next picnic. maybe some "Hi, my name is ____" stickers would be helpful to put screen names to actual people. ...

i want to thank those who organized the picknick, and those who provided & prepared the free lunch for me, my family and everybody else there.
the burger and beans i had was darned-tasty and really hit the spot.

someone snapped some shots of my son and daughter; please post the pics when you have time to sort and stuff.

i saw several camera's out , but didn't feel wierded out at all. you guys made me and my family feel comfortable.
for a few moments i almost forgot we were all packin'. ... then my 5 yr old son asked me what 'GUNS SAVE LIVES' means. he really put me on the spot and it was tough to answer that question with small words and in kid terms, but i think he allready knew/knows why mommy and daddy carry.

Kids terms: Mommy and daddy want you to be safe.

The training, be it soft and gentle, begins as soon as they are able to grasp that simple concept. It is built layer by layer - there is no substitute for solid family values.
