The problem is that even today, I have no way to know if I would be within 1000' of the school property. I don't see signs surrounding the perimeter of the schools. I googled "Maplewood schools" and got a map, but that didnt include the parochials.
One of those cases addressed that fact. The others did not.
If the government were to put up maps of the GFSZ's in the US, with the zones circled, like they do for FAA temporary flight restrictions, we could tell very quickly.
But that would be so "in your face" that it would make more people mad about it and there would be some legislative backlash.

Uhm, I will have to disagree with this just a little bit. No I do not think the FBI is following folks around waiting to pounce, however, I offer that if the Maplewood Walmart location had been within 1000 feet of a school, they would have hit Darrow with it since they were so desperately searching for ANYTHING to hit him with to pretty much no avail.

I don't know for sure, but it seems that Lancers mentioned he had a CCW permit in his original post regarding the Maplewood incident. If it was a MO permit, then it would have been a moot point.

Considering the implications that are derived from it, a federal felony will eliminate your gun rights, I would recommend that folks opting to open carry pay VERY close attention to this as it will cost a LOT to defend and it very well might stick in a hard way.

Some things, IMO, are just not worth the hassle. Walking into a school with an exposed gun, for example, even with the MO permit, IS ASKING FOR TROUBLE because you know ahead of time how law enforcement is going to react to such a situation. I don't know about everyone else, but I don't have the time, desire, or the money to spend "proving myself right" in court over this kind of thing.

I'm not disagreeing there. Thats why I think it something to be aware of. I just dont want to give the impression that every local LEO knows about 922(q) and is just itcing to get the feds to charge you.

In the situation you cite, yes, it very well could have led to a school zone charge. Much the same way the other cases did.

I guess I'm trying to get the point accross about school zones, but I dont want to encite paranoia.:shocker:

While I agree 100%, my perspective is literally a school I could throw a baseball from my drive way and likely land it on their property. I would guess it is under 300' while the building might be further, the property almost backs up to mine.

Last week with the tornado stuff going on, coupled with myself being a spotter, I walked up the street open carrying to get a view from around a tree line as to what the wall cloud was doing and reporting it back to the national weather service. I am sure I was within 100' of the property and I drive within 20 every single day, there is no other road out so I have 0 choice in the matter. My next door neighbor was with me out of curiosity.

This is a law that desperately needs changing and it is also likely one full of too much fire to get the politicians out on the limb for it. They will run like the cowards they are when the Brady's start saying they are trying to allow guns in schools which btw they SHOULD!

And for the Brady types reading along, this law has CAUSED shootings!

GUN FREE ZONES

"The Crime Control Act of 1990" was viewed by most as unimportant anti-crime legislation, but the "unintended consequences" have been tragic. It was the "The Crime Control Act of 1990" that established "gun free school zones."

Between the first school killings and the second, 195 years went by without incident. See the list below. Between the Poe Elementary attack and the Stockton School shootings, the "reason" for "gun free school zones," another 30 years went by, with six intervening incidents. In the 225 years between and including the Enoch Brown school massacre and the Stockton shootings there were a total of nine incidents. Since "gun free school zones" were established eighteen years ago, there have been an additional sixty-nine incidents. That is more than seven times as many, in the past 17 years, as in the preceding 225 years. Those sixty-nine incidents account for an additional 142 dead and more than 198 wounded. Apparently psychotics prefer killing zones where no one is likely to shoot back. It is time to do away with "gun free school zones."

July 26, 1764 thriugh May 20, 1988

1. Enoch Brown school massacre - Franklin County, Pennsylvania, July 26, 1764
2. Poe Elementary School Attack - Houston, Texas, September 15, 1959
3. University of Texas at Austin massacre - Austin, Texas, August 1, 1966
4. Jackson State killings - Jackson, Mississippi, May 14-15, 1970
5. California State University, Fullerton Library Massacre - Fullerton, California, July 12, 1976

7. Laurie Dann - Hubbards Woods Elementary School; Winnetka, Illinois, May 20, 1988
8. Stockton massacre - Stockton, California, January 17, 1989

"Gun Free Zones" are now in place.

Most of the following are the "unintended consequences" of gun free school zone legislation. This list is probably incomplete. The use of "School Unknown" in the list below means that the article, or data base, the information was drawn from did not provide the name of the school in question.

65/8=8r1 so in all the brilliance associated with the crime bill and gun free school zones for the children we have made it 8 times more likely to happen than it was BEFORE the law, BRILLIANT idea!

And here we have an article that speaks to the advantages of a permit when traveling outside WI. It makes it sound like a WI permit gets you around the GFSZ act anywhere.

http://onlygunsandmoney.blogspot.com/2011/05/wisconsin-legislature-begins-efforts-on.html

"This license bill offers some additional benefits. These include the ability to use the license to carry a concealed weapon in many other states while traveling and the ability to carry concealed weapons in school zones (1000-foot area surrounding school grounds). These zones are prolific and it is virtually impossible to navigate populated areas without entering them while engaging in routine activities. The federal penalty for a school zone violation is up to five years in prison and a fine."

Really? Hey thanks for the attempt at correcting me where there is no need for a correction. I think that you read as much into my statement as people will read into the quote from the article, since it makes it sound like the two issues are going hand in hand.
