Most mainstream churches need proof of income, yes.

The point is that John was missing the point when he used churches as an argument for not permitting.

Someone is doing it, especially with personal attacks.

Then they are not good churches. You should WANT to give to God's work. It says "God loves a cheerful giver". God doesn't want you money if it is extorted/coerced.

That was the point I was going for. While we are not required to give, it is a freewill offering.
