The only less-than-positive stories I hear from AZ always seem to come from the Prescott / Sedona section of the state. Where's our resident AZKopper from that area to post his info here? His replies are always welcome (and informative).

Well, maybe he's busy...

Is it just a coincidence that bad encounters happen when he's not posting on the forum? :)

this is your opinion, here is mine. you should always have a recorder on you. even if it is a positive encounter, it would still be great to hear it.

you can be BFed anywhere. you less likely need one in CA (because you can't carry there) then you would AZ. you still have gun laws on the books and you also have bad LEOs out there that don't (or won't) know the laws, and also citizens that don't know the laws.

carrying a recorder is the same as having a fire extinguisher (fire arm), you may never need it, but it's better to not need it and have it. then to need it and not have it

Once again, this is ARIZONA, not California or North Carolina. Although lately Zonies are getting lot's of OC advice from outsiders who have fewer 2nd amendment rights.

Clicking on a video or voice recorder in front of a Cop is NOT a good idea. You risk provoking the ARIZONA LEO into a heated discussion about your OC, which would otherwise be a friendly talk about guns and ammo.

But, do what you want. Then wander around the forums to whine about your 4th amendment rights were violated.

You won't get any sympathy from me.

The only one 'recklessly handling a firearm' was the cop!!

OP, play the encounter back in your head; count the number of times he swept you, himself or others with the muzzle. :banghead:

So you have a fire extinguisher on your belt. Cool! I must say I'm impressed, and I'd be glad to be in your company. Man, you just never know.

I must admit to being a little lazy. My fire extinguishers are in the house, shop, and trucks. I'm now ashamed.

but you do have them of course

GWBIKER , i would personal like to thank you for giving us permission to comment on a national web site. i know i am just wasting my time making suggestion on an AZ board since you do not have any anti's in your state, or for that matter any bad LEOs. i know we all can't live in La La land. lets just hope we can all get there.
and also thank you for pointing out that the 4th A is really not important, right up there with the 5th and 2nd and how about that 1st A. we really should not complain about them being abused.

and i do apologize to any one that reads this board in all the other 47 states that might have gained a little good idea about carrying a recorder. John, Philip and all you other people that carry a recorder know that you do not have to carry one in AZ, because they never have bad encounters there, or any good ones that you might like to record either. What's with the overly critical attitude? There's nothing wrong with carrying a recorder. It follows the same line of thought that motivates the carry of a firearm. It's for the just in case scenarios. I'm up in Washington state, and I carry one with me at all times. It's and app on my phone. When talking to an officer you don't need to hold it in their face, just have it on. Depending on your local laws you may need to inform them of the recording. But it's really not a big deal. Sure most LEOs don't care for the practice, but it helps to keep them honest. And before you say "until they take it away", that's why I use my phone. It records off site and I let them know that. As long as you are polite, and cooperate, things run pretty smooth. If the officer over steps, then you file a complaint after the fact.

Maybe take a deep breath and focus on the fact that since this is still a relatively free country, folks can do as they please within the limits of the law.

Yes, I do, and I also have recording devices in the truck. But in AZ and NV, I rarely carry them.

Again, even in my states, there's nothing wrong with carrying a recorder, and if I didn't mind being weighed down, I'd carry them more often, and each person has to weigh (no pun intended) their options against their likelihood of attracting attention.

Ah yes, comes your sarcasm........but then you appear to have nothing to add.....

So allow me: North Carolina needs an NRA castle doctrine, a restaurant carry bill and constitutional carry to be in line with Arizona gun owners. It seems you have some homework to perform.

Tomorrow, I'm headed to Phoenix to attend a gathering of several hundred AZCDL members at a major Motel conference room. Most, maybe all of us will legally OC a loaded handgun.
In most areas of this free country, that scheduled event would signal an alarm for armed Police intervention and the possible need for voice recorders.

To repeat once more: this is ARIZONA where we freely OC without LEO questioning and I believe we know what we're doing.

Come here to learn if you wish, but save the critique for your own gun laws.

yes you are right GW. you do not need a recorder in AZ like we do in NC or VA. i guess that is why so many of us carry one in these states. the fact that no one would ever think to confront you in AZ for carrying a firearm is so obvious that how could i think to question one so great as you. well i guess to the OP anyway

as far as castle doctrine goes i suppose the state of NC does have a bad one that does include your house work place and car. maybe we can get one as good as AZ. by the way i don't know what NRA has to do with it. the NRA hasn't done a whole lot for us

but maybe we can get the carrying in establishments that sell and consume alcohol like AZ does, they do there don't they, allow it i mean. of course without some kind of permit

hopefully we will get constitutional carry here. even then i think i will carry a recorder

What good is an empty gun?

I carry in Arizona all the time. Usually concealed, and I have the permit. I have to agree with some other posters here, if we are going to carry guns we must educate ourselves on the laws. This is as much good sense as learning safe handling, marksmanship and a regular practice schedule. Before you carry, read up. Ask your questions ahead of time, study and learn.

That said the first time I encountered an officer while armed was during a traffic stop long before our concealed carry laws came along. The DPS officer was very friendly, he thanked me for telling him about the loaded .38 revolver in the glove box rather than me just reaching in there to get the registration. He took it out at my invitation, looked it over, had no concerns with it being loaded. The officer put it back still loaded. He commented on the custom holster, my older brother's leather work is pretty good. We were both very polite, no fuss at all. I left with a verbal warning to slow down.

As a way to find solid information on the law, I'm going to suggest something a bit unusual perhaps. Wikipedia. Not suggesting this as an absolute source of legal interpretations, but at the end of Wikipedia articles are links to reference data. Go here, page down to the References section and check out some of the links. Many are Arizona state government sites:

It's a matter of perspective.

When I retired to Tucson, after living in Virginia for 15 years, from my perspective I moved to a more restrictive state. The CCW permit process was designed to discourage permits while lining the pockets of state "approved" instructors. Even though open carry was still Constitutionally protected, court decisions had made it all but illegal without a permit. Restaurant Carry was non-existent, state preemption was a joke and you couldn't carry in "public" buildings.

Rather than sit around and grouse, I co-founded AzCDL with a handful of other like-minded individuals who believed there's more to the RKBA movement than whining on Internet forums.

We (AzCDL) have made a lot of progess, but we still have a very long road ahead of us to fully restore the right to bear arms in Arizona.

Whatever state you live in, I recommend rechanneling your energy into getting invovled and changing the laws in your state. It can be done. You don't have to create and run an organization. Work gun shows for the group in your state and when the legislature is in session, voice your opinion on pending bills or write a letter to the editor. It only takes a few minutes and you CAN make a difference.

Arizona is NOT similar to somewhere else. I attended the AZCDL meeting in Phoenix yesterday where even the several politicians in attendance (and speaking) were armed. I don't think you'll find that much anywere else. (I was the guy in the black cowboy hat... dark blue denim everything else w/cross draw 1911 at the same table as Alan Gura / 'Cartridge Family')

I really get annoyed with those who don't live here... 'never been here telling US what our LEO's are like. 'Been my experience they all know the law on firearms... many of 'em are native 'Zonies. We... most of us anyway... actually like and support our law enforcement people, unlike much of elsewhere.

True this is a national forum... but don't lump in Arizona with any other state. It truely is different here.

As for the OP's 'tale'... I have reservations.

I saw you but I was busy at table #46 chatting with a thirty-something blond gal from Tucson who carries a 9mm Taurus.

Indeed it's different here. I've told by friendly local/County Police that they ASSUME everyone in Arizona is armed.

As for the OP's 'tale'... I have reservations.

If it occurred to him in Prescott....it could possibly be true.

You got that right, it is far more restrictive than Utah or Idaho.

Yup, you are right again. I haven't seen it since the last political event I attended here in Utah.

Just because we don't live there full time, many of us spend significant amounts of time in Arizona. Even in states where we not only have extremely gun friendly laws but also court precedent, we still find LEOs that don't like having armed citizens and take every opportunity to try and make life miserable for us lowly peons.

I don't think I can say AZ is more restrictive than UT. I can't comment on ID, but I consider myself an expert on NV, AZ, and UT.

They are just restrictive in different ways. UT with its unloaded requirement when on a public street (not in a car), and AZ with its laws on restaurants/bars/etc.

What do you consider the disadvantage that puts AZ over UT in overall restrictiveness?

Seriously? One could easly argue that since Arizona does not require its citizens to obtain permission slips to carry either openy or discreetly (unlike the two states you listed), that it is less restrictive. Would that be correct? Depends. Each state has its own quirky laws and regulations when it comes to guns. What may be odd to someone in Arizona may not be odd to someone in Texas, and visa versa. Case in point, I recently visited Texas and found it strange that per Texas law, amusement parks are prohibited places of carry. I also find it strange that OC is illegal in Texas, but compared to New York or California, they are lightyears ahead in gun-related liberty. So please be careful when you make blanket statements like this one, as it really is subjective.

It depends on your perspecitve and what specific laws you are looking at.

Rather that get into "my state is better than your state," just recognize that until any law-abiding person can carry any time and in any place they have a right to be, without any "but only if.." modifiers, the guns laws in all states are too restrictive.

That's why I use the term "restore" the right to bear arms in Arizona. We (AzCDL) are not adding any new rights. We're restoring the ones taken from us.

Let's see....

Any business that sells alcohol
Public and private schools
Polling places
Game preserves
Public events
Municipal restrictions
Any "posted" building
