I think the impetus to get along with others is so ingrained into our evolutionary psyche that most humans find it difficult to steel themselves for conflict. Instead, the few pockets of organized dictatorship tends to take society by surprise. They're vulnerable, and easily subdued if not eliminated. This same predisposition sets them up for failure at the hands of slow, subtle invasion, as well as the twisted erosion of their rights and ability to protect themselves.
The only reason we're not swallowing this hook, line and sinker here in the U.S. is because most of us immigrated here in recent centuries from areas where our ancestors were being oppressed.
We were the ones who lived, and that's in our genes, too.
