"Gun rights advocacy groups were quick to say that if Gilbert's and Cole's bills had passed, perhaps someone on the Virginia Tech campus would have been armed and able to stop the shooter.

That view was evident on the Web site of the Virginia Citizens Defense League, which announced the shootings on its Web site with the headline "Gun-control claims lives at Virginia Tech."

In the post, the VCDL said colleges and universities lobbied against the bills.

"The General Assembly turned a deaf ear to allowing college and university students to be able to protect themselves and here we are today," the post said. "If just ONE of those victims had been armed, this most probably would have turned out very differently."

Another pro-gun group, Opencarry.org, sent out e-mails with a similar message."
