I guess it comes down to when I am leaving a store and an employee asked to see a receipt, because others are inclined to steal, I am not offended. Others are, and that is up to them.
Would you be offended if stopped on the interstate to show your license, because others were known to speed? If so, how many times per trip?

It still smacks of "paperz pleaz." That to me is intolerable.

He is in the top 3% of income earners, soooo keeping an eye on us less income earners is OK. Just thought I would mention the bridge I have for sale in Wilmington if anybody is interested.

I went to the Dollar Tree on Guess Rd on the way home from work. Got into a conversation with the cashier about guns and carry laws. He is twenty and was under the impression that he wasn't allowed to carry. I let him know that he could have been carrying for two years already. I thought that I had a flyer with me but did not so I just wrote the URL for this site down on some scrap paper for him. He seemed very happy to get the info.

Later my wife and I went out to the Harris Teeter down in the same area. Pretty boring. We then went down into Durham to the Whole Foods down on Broad St. That would have been just as boring but while we were about to leave some guy came walking past the store and yelling. It was almost as if he was yelling at someone only he could see - he was even pointing and such. Very odd. In terms of OC'ing, though, there wasn't anything to report.

I'm still not sure why everyone is so afraid to carry in Durham...

Old beliefs and attitudes die hard - Durham used to be a you're-in-a-lot-of-trouble-boy type of town. Much has improved there over the years.

I remember that Durham had a registration requirement that had been grandfathered, but could find no reference to it still existing or having been repealed.*

Note that the Durham Sheriff's site does have some outdated and erronious information on it - see permits.

*Found this, but it does not seem to have passed.

Nice try. I do have a problem with being stopped, because the law states that law enforcement needs a RAS to stop.

Is there a law that states that a store representative CAN'T ask for a receipt to protect against theft? I know…,I know…, when you buy the items it becomes your property.

You tried to advance your argument by suggesting that I was a door greeter. If that was meant to be an insult, you failed.

I admire those elderly people. At least they are out earning a living instead of sitting on their butts collecting unemployment.

So what explains the success of Walmart in the U.S? I guess we in the U.S. aren't so sensitive. I would guess there was more to Walmart pulling out of Germany than simply asking to see a receipt.

No...different culture. The Germans didn't like being asked to prove they just walked through the checkout line, and they also wanted to bargain. Different cultures, different successes. What works in one place does not always work in another. (*shrug*)

Perhaps...and glad they are doing some work, no problem with that. The work they are being told to do, however, is annoying and completely unenforceable. The most I have done at Walmart is flash my receipt, if they ask to see it, I tell them they already have and keep walking. I don't stop for the store buzzers either. If they want to follow me to the car, they are welcome.

When it get's down to it, they rely on people being sheep or fearful. WW was correct, they have NO ability to do anything other than detain for LEO to arrive IF THEY WITNESS YOU STEALING. If they did not see something being stolen, they cannot do anything legally. Period and end of story.

OK let change the interstate to the parking lot in Wal-Mart. Would you have a problem with an employee stopping you to see if you had a license?

or if you were asked to empty your pockets for inspection before leaving the store.....to make sure you were not hiding stolen goods?

Most (all?) major big box stores have extensive video/security equipment - they will not hesitate to call for LE if they have the evidence recorded.

To fish blindly at the door as people exit is just security theater BUT nevertheless insulting.

Yes, I commend the older workers that seek gainful employment, but I criticize Wal-Mart for shuffling their hours to deny them full-time benefits and treating them like 2nd class citizens.

Being BIG doesn't make Wal-Mart right any more than our government is right because it is BIG. ymmv

WW,

Sam's Club checks everyones receipt as they leave. Do you have a problem with that? Walmart must be having theft issues and might be using the same policy as Sam's Club.

I don't know the law, but why can Sam's do it and not Walmart?

If Walmart is having a greater than usual theft problem, Walmart needs to install more cameras and hire more LP...not harass PAYING customers who just walked away from a register after paying.

If they did not catch the theft before that, they are not going to catch a theft at the door with an 80yo grandmother. Not only is it ineffective, it is insulting.

store i was associated with in the past put in place a system where the shopping carts could not be wheeled past the front doors of the store. cost them a fortune but they were losing thousands of dollars of merchandise out the front door on a weekly basis...

however, when you go through and load up with all the meats from the section and then gaggles of containers of 'laundry detergent' (drug makings) and then cover the cart with large bags of dog food to obscure what you are trying to steal it adds up quickly!!

and you are right the grandmother greeting or LP - not conducive to stopping the bad guys from wheeling their way to the parking lot to unload their ill gotten booty by their accomplices and be gone. (saw a surveillance vid and quite impressed how quickly they unloaded the cart and were headed down the highway)

sorry to point out those elderly people as you refer to them (seniors?) are trying to make ends meet so they can continue to survive (uh, $200+/mth heating bills etc.) on pensions devastated by the 'global recession of 2009' and inadequate SSN benefits...

and your perspective of 'sitting on their butts....' is truly a condescending mentality unworthy of someone so obviously educated...your parents, whom are obviously elderly, would be ashamed to hear you verbalize and present that mentality about them!

OC in Cary Bass Pro

First, new to the forum....great conversations.

Now for the OC RPT. My boy and I were in Cary last weekend to recon the recently opened Bass Pro Shop (aka: my Mecca). I OC everyday and remembered some discussion a while back about Cary not allowing OC. I whipped out the smart phone and pulled up Cary ordinances and comments on this site. From what I gathered one can OC in Cary on private property unless posted. Therefore I proceeded to Carry On. Approaching the door we looked for the communist GFZ sticker and was pleased to see none. Once inside there were some glances and a few stares, but no comments.

Overall uneventful. Unrelated, but I prefer the BPS in Myrtle Beach to the Cary location for obvious reasons.

thanks,

Old Soldier (ABN)

finally, lets stop the BS and rumors and propaganda about Walmart leaving Deutschland in 2006...they couldn't keep up with the rapidly changing retain environment and the local nationals refused to adapt to Walmart imposing US business practices on them.

Actually, the main reason I see cited over and over (easy google on them) is that Walmart was losing money since they were not the lowest priced chain in Germany, and Germans have a habit of "splitting the basket" and shop in multiple locations to get the best prices. Further problems were labor, community relations, and stupid employee business practices (notably smiling greeters/cashiers, daily pre-shift chants, etc).

But the gist is that Germans weren't shopping there since the prices were no better than the competition and were turned off by Walmart in general.
