What is a 501c3?Who wants to spin AlabamaOpenCarry.Org as a 501c3? It takes a minimum of three signatures, and meetings must be held which are open to the public.
A non-profit organization. Might be a good idea but we'd need some heavy backing (OCDO maybe?)Kirbinator wrote:What is a 501c3?Who wants to spin AlabamaOpenCarry.Org as a 501c3? It takes a minimum of three signatures, and meetings must be held which are open to the public.

It might be better to go 501(c)(4), due to all the political prohibitions on 501(c)(3). It could be difficult for us to remain "non-partisan" and neither "support nor oppose" anyone running for public office. We'd just have to make a good case for our org promoting "social welfare."Who wants to spin AlabamaOpenCarry.Org as a 501c3? As long as our 'primary purpose' isn't political, we should be okay as a (c)(3), but I'm okay with either. Who wants to write up our charter and file the paperwork? Not it! Just kidding. I'll help however I can.Kirbinator wrote:It might be better to go 501(c)(4), due to all the political prohibitions on 501(c)(3). Oh, and contributions wouldn't be tax-deductible, either. :uhoh:
Absolutely, dude! Well said! The law doesn't HAVE to allow...if it ain't illegal, by definition, it's LEGAL!The sheriff just demonstrated his ignorance of how law works in this nation. There does not have to be a law that allows open carry. Unless there is a law that makes it illegal, it is legal.
I guess that this sheriff thinks that he can stop anything he doesn't want people to do as long as there is no law saying we can do it. If he mistakenly thinks this, he shouldn't be a sheriff.
The Sheriff's ignorance of the law is hung out on the line for all to see.
I also commented on his YouTube video. It is awaiting 'approval'. I would recommend anyone who tries to comment to be polite and professional. Maybe he is at least reading the comments before he deletes them and might learn something.Okay, boys and girls! I saw the video about Sheriff Hughes, by Rickey Stokes, on YouTube. I made a comment about the Sheriff being wrong and listed the applicable laws in the little space I had available. The video author channel, JSKeppy, DELETED my comment from the video page. I went to his channel page, listed some more information, including this website and OCDO where he could check it out for all legal documents pertaining to Open Carry and that comment was deleted as well. It appears we have a so-called news source that prints and broadcasts what he wants to hear regardless of the truth. Gee, like that has never happened.
I think we can add K-Arms to the list of businesses we won't support. :banghead:Occupation:

To Sheriff Hughes:
In reference to your recent interview concerning the revocation of a concealed weapons permit, you need to check your facts. My sister was an officer in Auburn for several years and would be appalled at your lack of due diligence in knowing the laws you pro-port to serve.
It's interesting to me that you direct people to the Attorney General's website; here is what I found there.
http://www.ago.alabama.gov/oldopinions/8400205.pdf
In the Attorney General's opinion, "...a permit is not required when a person afoot carries an unconcealed pistol." This was decided in the Looney v. State decision.
I am further shocked that you direct people to call you for advice on the law. Your duty is to uphold the laws and the constitution of Alabama, not reeducate and misdirect the public.
Lastly, you erred in confiscating this gentleman's sidearm. No crime was committed and there was no reason to believe one would be committed imminently. This is clearly an unjust and unlawful seizure.
I can't wait to see the decision on this one; you sir are in for a ride.
Sincerely,
