Just signed up for my concealed weapons training class at a local adult ed. It's NRA Basic Pistol. My class is Saturday, March 6th. I just wanted to share that with the board. =) I'm excited for it and will be glad to be carrying concealed in Denver. Wanted to also say I will probably openly carry more often like from the car to the store front or so on and simply cover up instead of leaving if hassled. It truly is fear of people's reactions and police officer's reactions that keeps me from openly carrying literally everywhere I go.
I'm sure I'm taking a big step here, regardless of carry, in educating myself and furthering my learning of firearms.

Comments, Rants, Raves?

Does the class include any range time? My permit took almost the full allotted wait time in Douglas county last year.

Range time- Yes, sir. 50 Rounds within 80% accuracy of the target area. I own a .45 and .40 cal but I will most likely use their rental .22 and ammo. $15 bucks for both- that's cheaper than 50 rounds for my .45 or .40 that I'm so comfortable with.

Jefferson. We chatted, earlier, about your Jefferson County permit process. How's that going and how long has it been? Is there any link between previous criminal history- being misd. charges- and the length to approve? The Sheriff's website states they will contact me to come in and get my permit- Make's the whole thing sound quick and snappy.

Misdemeanor shouldn't hurt your ability to get a "Concealed Handgun Permit" (as it's technically known).

In Jeffco it really is as easy as it sounds--provided there's no reason to deny it. I went in, turned in the application, they took copies of the safety class certificate, took my money, electronically fingerprinted me and I was on my way. It did take nearly the full 90 days before I got the call to come pick it up.

Jeffco is very easy. You go to the sheriff's office on one of the two days (tues/thurs, 8-4), follow the big CCW sign, hand over everything and sit down. 5 minutes later, you get fingerprinted, and you're out. 90 days later, you go get a pictar taken and grab your card and you're done.

I'm still waiting for the call back :)

Thanks that sums it up! Just like I thought. I'm going to put on a HUGE smile I just know it. I'm going to this class by myself, though. I thought I would get my girlfriend and friends to take the class with me and nobody came through in the end- but that's fine! I'm saying I'm looking forward to making new friends and meeting the instructor. Should be a good time.

Let us know what kinda crap the instructor says about OC vs. CC and other laws. My instructor told the class that CC on your person in your vehicle is illegal without a permit and that open carry in Colorado in any kind of holster that covered more then 30% of the weapon was considered concealed, And anyone who OC's should be ready for a felony stop at gun point after scared citizens call in the MWAG. I got a more then a few wired looks when I laughed at that one. Its amazing to me how wrong some of the info these instructors are putting out in these classes.

lmao I know about the laughing I was reading thread after thread on this forum about just this CC vs OC from the NRA instructor

And of course it's always: OC will get you arrested/fined/is brandishing

A few threads have our members standing up for Open Carry right there in front of everyone- citing the exact state revised statute to the fact- or simply the Constitution of said State.

A few people mention filing complaints against the NRA instructor, with the NRA, for misguiding his class and providing false legal information.

A few people suggest filing in court against the instructor for his obvious attempt to limit ones rights- when he is in the position of an authority figure on the subject

I'm just gunna chill out and maybe doodle or something lol.. maybe write the guy next to me a note saying I open carry all the time never been in trouble- pass it down!

Congrats. Nice knowing that you can legally carry in Denver now. Now there should never be a reason for you to be unarmed. Good luck! Hope it doesn't take the full 90 days.

I have been debating getting my NRA instructors license, I mainly, when I still teach, teach defensive tactics with (or without firearms) with range time, plus mat time, retention, close quarters shooting, etc.

I find that many CCW instructors are extremely short sighted and read one book, and that's about it.

My firearms library is about 100+ books, including state laws, various opinions, techniques, ground shooting, yuo name it. I think anyone who teaches firearms should be reading a book a month at least, and be doing alternative training.

I applied for my CCW in Colorado Springs 4 weeks ago. I marked it on the calendar because the silly and inefficient background check service they use takes 8-10 weeks to complete the app.

I'm no stranger to firearms and gun safety, so to save money, I just took a hunter-safety class ($15) at Sportsman's Warehouse. Loads cheaper than the various pistol defense and concealed carry classes around. Important to me, since the appication for the CCW itself cost 'friggin $160.

I'll still open carry whenever I get the chance, though. Just got my Serpa, and will be starting off visiting the Starbucks downtown when I 'get around to it'. :)

Everyone Waiting For Permit: As the Concealed Coordinator in Montrose County I thought it would be advisable and helpful for you all to know that CBI is taking about a month or two to run checks on people. I am still backlogged into Decemeber waiting for checks on them. Keep waiting!

Everyone- I just got home from my NRA Basic Pistol class. Right off the bat- the instructor notified everybody that they do Not need a permit to conceal carry in their vehicle or on their persons in their home. So I was really happy about that..

He went into all the places you cannot carry- at the end he asked if there were any questions- I raised my hand and stated you can OC anywhere except Denver City/County, unless posted by signage. The instructor said "Yes that's right." and nodded to the class- then another man raised his hand to confirm- and the instructor confirmed for him that indeed it's true. I was really pleased.

But then he dropped some bombshells!

He literally told our class that OC is "wild wild west" style like a "cowboy" and even did a little hand gesture like a quick draw from the hip. I put my hand in my face. He then went on to say that if the entire class were to leave with their guns on their hips- there would be emergency legislation to ban it. I was furious at this point- obviously he doesn't realize that in Colorado, open carry is more popular than concealed- IE Hunting! It's not like we jam our rifles in our shorts while tailing deer.

I kept my mouth shut- I was a bit nervous, honestly, from speaking up the first time. For lunch, at noon, We had pizza- and EVERYONE was talking about the Starbucks incident. The people next to me were talking mad crap about open carry. They just didn't understand why anyone would want to show their guns. I informed the group that people open carry because concealing costs money and is morally unjust- I told her that a Right cannot be revoked, privileged, or licensed. As she was speaking about California, at the time- I also told her that those pistols, in California, were not loaded due to law. The four of them thanked me, told me I was very knowledgeable of our laws, and never spoke negatively of open carry again. I later informed them that I open carry and was only at the class so I could carry in Denver and in the State of Michigan.

Well we watched some REALLY good legal videos and interviews with prosecutors and DAs. I learned a lot about when a self defense homicide is justifiable and when it's not.

We then handed fake blue guns to practice the isosceles and Weaver standing positions. The instructor had us close our eyes and reacquire our targets- which was fun to try and get down to a T.

At the very end- we had range time. I was given the option to rent a 22 semi-auto and some rounds for $15. I rented. $15 is cheaper than a box for my .45 that I carry daily. We were required to shoot an 8.5 x 11 white piece of paper. One clip- if you were terrible- the instructor would work with you until you hit it.

I fired an entire clip out of the 22 Ruger like it was nothing. Felt more like a bb gun or airsoft than anything else. If my eyes were closed I would have never knew the gun was firing! That's how smoooooooth that went. I put all the rounds into the center.

I walked away WITH MY CERTIFICATE!! Applying next week at the Sheriff's office.

OPEN CARRY is the NORM in carrying a gun. Conceal carry is abnormal (and thus the permit)
