One makes a statement on how they dress to everyone around them, even if comb your hair or cut or do not cut it, it all makes a statement, carrying a hunting rifle makes a statement, does not it say he or she is a hunter and possibly hunting going to or from?
Open carrying is a statement either you like it or not and you can asked yourself, one of the main purposes of open carry is to what make it notable so it may become normal in most peoples eyes, that is a statement.
Now that you have been educated you are able to reduce your assumptions and ignorance upon others and then of course we have our narcissistic on this forum.
Lots of interesting comments so far.
Lots of wild emotions too, sometimes funny to read.
Going back to the original post by the original poster (O/P), to me, having been there and done that, it strikes me of PTSD as I said. When I first got out I also tricked-out my Ruger mini to be just like a semi auto stock folding assault rifle. And I had my Browning High Power fully loaded and with me all the time, most often OC (I was in grad school in another Western state that was traditional OC). Thousands of rounds of ammo. Did not trust civilians nor LEOs any further than I could spot them in my iron sights.
Took a long time to get over that. At least 10 years. I think most x-military can relate.
Moving on to the topic of sending a message, this issue is in hot debate on John's website here. There are some who think OC is always appropriate and always sends the right message; there are some who think OC is never appropriate and never sends the right message; and there are some in between.
I OC whenever it is the most appropriate solution for security, and I CCW when I need security but OC is not possible or legal, and the rest of the time I stay inside the house, where the Scalia opinion of the Roberts court has stated that in my home I have a 2A constitutional right to be armed with any handgun of my choosing and any shotgun that is not sawed off.
OC is the fastest and most prepared way to be armed. It is easily possible with practice to draw and shoot in a fraction of a second. Less than half.
CC is the most discrete way to be armed.
Each has their advantages and disadvantages.
Assumptions are things that need to be made when a decision is needed and facts are missing. Assumptions are best avoided anytime they can be properly researched and replaced with facts. Some people avoid assumptions like the plague, while others jump to assumptions habitually.
Debate is a rational forensic method of comparing your belief system with someone else's. It should be rational and factual, and should not involve emotion. Emotional appeals and ad hominem insults are detractors from proper forensic debate.
I agree with Dave on the statement side of this issue.
