When this happened, they discussed it on the morning radio talk show and it was stated that one of the guards was a ex-military (marine, iirc) involved had previously been disciplined in his security for intervening. (sorry I can't link a source.)
I worked security many, many years ago and the training was clear and explicit--observe and report. It's one thing if I see a truck with three guys ripping of the warehouse (that's a phone call), different entirely seeming someone get a beatdown (that's my intervention even at personal risk and loss of employment).
