A common speed which most people can relate to is 60 MPH. At that speed, one is traveling 88 feet per second. So a bullet which leaves a barrel at, say, 1150 fps is traveling at

(1150 / 88) x 60 = 784 MPH rounded

This is a quick and dirty method which is easily remembered. Now for a common 5.56mm round...

(3200 / 88) x 60 = 2182 MPH rounded


Another figure that is interesting is how many RPM's does a bullet spin when it leaves a barrel? Let's take our 5.56mm round with a muzzle velocity of 3250 and figure this with a 1 in 12" rifling.

(12 / twist) x (3250 x 60) = 195000 RPM (where twist is 1:12)

(12 / twist) x (3250 x 60) = 146250 RPM (where twist is 1:16)

1150 * 7 = 8050. Drop the digit gives 805 (instead of 784.09--close enough).
