Wife’s father is at a low rent assisted living facility in Medford, Wi. Every Sunday after church, I drop her off there, go grocery shopping, go back to pick her up. Open carry in summer, but conceal at church. Conceal if I need a jacket. So, basically I have been walking in there all summer open carry. They have two staff on duty, I had conversations about my firearm with 2 of them three different times. All said no problem. Never had any conversation with a manager or supervisor, don’t work on Sunday I suspect?
Three weeks ago I first noticed the sign, walked in concealed but didn’t say anything to anyone but wife.
Two Saturday’s ago there was an armed standoff on the street and residents of the home were asked to shelter in place, in center area away from windows. We had company and did not go that Sunday, and honestly, I forgot about it.
Yesterday, back to routine. Unarmed to enter. I know the one worker better than most and asked if it was because of me? She said no, we had this armed standoff, it’s because of THAT!
I said your sign was up BEFORE that happened. Oops. Then it was all company policy, i don’t make the rules, nobody asked me, etc. Probably mostly true, I suspect. These are people making $10-$13 an hour and turnover is atrocious. Care likely not much better.
Anyway, kind of at a loss what to do. It is a private facility. I asked her is she felt the sign would have stopped that guy the other day? She said no. She was also one I had talked to before while armed. She said the sign is not for you, you’re good, but I know that’s not true, nor does she have the power to grant that.
I guess the firearm is going in the trunk. I’m only there for a few minutes walking in, saying hi, and leaving. Real conversation is difficult, but it’s her Father so she visits him, as she should. I’m not inclined the make a big stink about the sign, it’s not like we’re going to move him because of it.
I would like to know if the sign is there because of me however. I suppose that is a conversation taken up with a manager.
