Hey everyone, the name is Rob and I'm brand new to OC'ing. In fact I don't start until I pick up my Springfield XD .40 2morow. Any advice for a new guy? Any places that are against firearms?

Welcome to OCDO Smitty757 - very active OC people in and around Tidewater/Hampton Roads.

1st suggestion - put at least 2-300 rounds down range on your new XD to insure that it has no hics or cups in it. :D

By and large most businesses are becoming acclimated and accepting of OCers. Look for signs posted and if asked to leave do so politely - follow through after the fact as you will.

Some of your neighbors will likely chime in shortly. Meet up with them when you get a chance. Consider joining VCDL - at least sign up for the free Va-Alerts.

I do belive that this has changed. That or me and 50+ other people broke the law about a week ago. It was a VCDL event

Yes I cut and pasted it then went back to read it and the two I marked were overturned. If you click on the link for that law it takes you to the site that says it has been repealed or changed to not apply to firearms.

There should be a sticky with a CURRENT list updated only by an administrator. I tried to read Ed's card back but my eyes are now too weak to read the small print. I searched for my cereal box magnafying glass but couldn't find it! :-(

Ed usually updated his card to reflect the new July 1 changes. Hopefully we can make the list small enough to use a readable font. :)

The new, revised VCDL information card should be available soon, resplendent in a new color.

By space limitations (there are sooo many small changes i.e. universities) some of the notations will be links to VCDL's site.

Actually, Governor Bob had issued an executive order over a year ago that directed that the "no guns in state parks" should not be prosecuted. We actually had a picnic there last year not 100 yds away.

We were celebrating the official GA endorsed change in the statute law.

More than a year in the making, the state code is being changed after Gov. Bob McDonnell in January 2011 ordered the Department of Conservation and Recreation to stop enforcing the regulation banning guns from parks.

OC'd to the polls this AM at moose lodge. Last time I got a few questions and a poll worker defended the 2A and educated his co-volunteers before I could open my mouth... lol. This time just a standard welcome and thank you. In and out.

Also. My friends new Deli is 2a friendly (Owned by Jersey Natives too!). He had his taste test day today for friends and family. Opens friday with the grand opening in a few weeks.

The name I will keep silent for now but I will be calling the next Hampton Roads dinner in a week or so. The word on the subject is "All are welcome".
This place does not wait tables as restricted by lease... (Pretty screwed up). No tips allowed, but wouldnt you know it, they are setting up donation jars for our Great Dane Rescue group!

Let me just tell you this, the food today was fantastic, as is the atmosphere and service. ;)

OC'd at the Golden Corral on Independence, Dick's and Walmart on Lynnhaven to find the better deal on a Nikon Prostaff. No issues, ran into a gentleman pricing ammo and said he had just got him a new 9mm and asked me about my OC. He said he wasn't familiar with the laws and i referred him to OCDO to learn the ropes. I wish I could get my hands on some OCDO cards to hand out...

VCDL's carry cards are in the process of being revised then reprinted.

Right on! I look forward to getting my hands on some, may even take the layout and get some printed out on business cards to handout.

Too much to cover on standard size business card. VCDL's card is twice that size, but folds nicely in half - problem solved.

Hey everyone, first time poster here, been lurking for a few days. My name's Taylor, I'm active duty AF and from Northern California. I decided to wait to post until I OC'd for the first time. I live in Hampton and I've had a CCW for a few weeks now, but decided to explore the option to open carry. Today was my first day open carrying in public. I spent several hours out in town, carrying my Glock 19 in a Blackhawk Serpa retention holster on my strong side. I went to A&P Arms, Walmart and Farm Fresh. I did not get stopped by any LEOs, but I did have three comments on my firearm. The first two were at Farm Fresh, first a man who put his hands up and said "don't shoot me" and then asked me for bus money to Norfolk. The second was a young cashier who sidled up to me and asked me, "Do you have a license for that?". I replied that a license is not required to open carry a firearm in Virginia provided you're legally allowed to posses one. The third guy was at Wal Mart, he asked me "What is that young man?", and I replied "This is a Glock 19." He was curious to how I was "allowed to do that" (open carry), and I told him the same thing I told the Farm Fresh clerk. He seemed surprised and carried on. All in all a very positive experience for my first time OCing, to be honest I was VERY nervous for a while but quickly calmed down after nothing bad happened. Looking forward to doing it again with my "weapon of choice", so to speak, which is a Glock 20.

Welcome! It is surprising you had that many people even notice that you were OC-ing the first time or even first week! Most people either don't notice or don't care.

Read up on the laws but VA's laws are much nicer than Kalifornistan!

I OC-ed to Plaza Azteca, Tysinger, some craft store that used to be Ben Franklins. :) No issues.

I agree, it made me very uncomfortable for a second. If he had done that in front of the wrong person I could see it creating a huge issue. Thanks for the welcome, I did A LOT of research for the past 6 months on gun laws in Virginia. I wish California's weren't so terrible. I would probably move back and settle up North where I grew up one day, it's a beautiful state, but the I won't ever go back if the gun laws don't change.

... The first two were at Farm Fresh, first a man who put his hands up and said "don't shoot me" ...

It still amazes me that people think it's ok to play that game.

I have concluded that many people do not know how to behave as adults when in proximity to a firearm. It may well be the first one that they have ever seen "in person".

So, they revert to the same reaction they had, when they were children ... or have seen in films. The only way they know to acknowledge the presence of the firearm is to feign victimhood.

Infortunately, an observer might see this as a brandishing incident ... and it goes downhill from there.

R1 is a solid performer.

+P ammo in them is discussed here:
http://forums.1911forum.com/showthread.php?t=347731

Thank you Kind Sir, for the link.
Read the whole thing and agreed with several points. I just read it today.
I got the Wolff 18.5 LB Recoil Spring in the mail over the weekend (before even seeing this post) because I had the same thoughts about the +P ammo I bought when I got the gun.

I guess I need to catch up with the rest of this thread when I get back from shopping. Quartermaster closes in 30 min and I want to see if they have a mag pouch I like or should I wait to get one online...

OC'd again today to Superior Gun and Pawn in Hampton (looking for 10mm range ammunition, $41.00 for a box of 50 OUCH, guess I'll have to order in bulk :( ), Wal Mart again, and 7-11. Still no negative experiences, no comments or questions this time either. I had originally OC'd with the idea in mind that I wouldn't make it a habit and stick to CCW unless clothing made it irrelevant, but I think I may stick to it now because it has been going well, and frankly it is much more comfortable than having a gun inside of my waist band. I also really like the Blackhawk holster that I use, and I have much more faith in it than the El Cheapo IWB holster I have. Are there any events coming soon near the Hampton area, like an OC dinner or something? I looked through the forum and didn't see any but I could have missed it. Willing to drive an hour or so.
