Same as usually, store employee at Walmart, we talked for 10 mins or so. She wanted to get a gun and carry, and knew about some guns.

Hampton gun show today, 12~4pm, passed out a few OC cards, I went with my uncle and aunt, he was OCing, we went to bloom afterwards to pick up some food.

Oh, I saw some guy OCing a 1911 + a baton. :p

Welcome! The first month or so of newly OC-ing is an adrenaline rush. After that it becomes like carrying a wrist watch. Try to join a dinner when one gets scheduled and join VCDL. Educate yourself on the law and know where you can an can't OC/carry. I was just a few days ago I got into a conversation with a man about his USP tactical. I forgot to mention that to OC a threaded barrel in some VA localities you need a CHP. So there are a few gotchya's that are hard to find/understand even after reading the text of the law several times. This forum is great for discussing any parts of the law that concern you. (although we are not lawyers and can only offer our best opinion) http://leg1.state.va.us/cgi-bin/legp504.exe?000+cod+18.2-287.4

I am a Sig fan but concentrate more on the P220 line than the 1911. I'm sure you will love both guns.

OC-ed to Farm Fresh then to Dick's at the mall yesterday. At Dicks, I ran into DJEEPER while holding my daughters purse as she tried on some clothes. :) Not the most OC-manly presentation but no one joked me with my USP on my hip. ;-)

ETA: OC-ed to Olive Garden and sat strong side out but no issues.

Yea it has been a big rush but that is starting to subside. Thanks for the link. That was the first place I found and I read every single code I could about carry laws. The hardest part sometimes is understanding the way that crap is written. You mentioned in a later post that you had a half a box of OC cards from Ed on lobby day and gave out about half of that. I was one of the fellow OCers that you gave some out to, and I just wanted to say thanks again. I have given some out to some of the people I work with that want to open carry too but are too afraid of all the attention it can draw. So thanks again.

Had a good day today. The wife decided it was time for her to start to OC with me. I was so proud of her! We went to A&P to pick her up a good retention holster. From there we went to Janaf Shopping center to walk around. Stopped in too many stores to list but not one problem. I guess two people carrying side arms is a little intimidating. I have to say I did hear a lot more people say excuse me, and use manners more than when we weren't carrying, lol.

About those people from work that are hesitant to OC - bring them to an OC dinner/get together - would be very enlightening to them.

Congrats on the wife OCing - a family that carries together, stays together. :D

No problem for the link.

As far as the OC cards that was MSC 45acp. People often confuse us online. :)

OCed to some usual places (Farm Fresh, Food Lion, Exxon) no issues.

Well it seems I'm a bit slow on the posting thing haha.

So lemme start out by saying thank you for the amazing resource and I'm glad to finally be a part of it.
The first time I open carried was the walmart I work at on college drive. The managers were quite uneasy at first but they came around to realize that its not going to jump out of its holster and shoot them. Ive also carried in a few restaurants in the area since purchasing my reverse tone beretta 92 in November. I love OCin and I suggest it to everyone I encounter. Ive never had an issue aside from the occasional :what: Overall a very good experience. Glad to live in such a great state. :D

Hello everyone ive been using this website as a resource in my actions and I finally decided to become a part of the community and post. Bought my first handgun in November and have been open carrying since. Ive open carried quite a few places with no issues such as wal-mart (I actually work there and if I have to go on my days off I open carry with no problems. Actually got several Other employees to open carry when they are off.) Ive carried in several restaurants and other places with no issue. Just a lot of looks from the random customers who ask if its legal. All and all its been an amazing experience and I'm glad to finally have the ability to post.

A hearty welcome aboard - good to have you amongst us. Avail yourself of the opportunity to learn as much as possible about the applicable laws, does, and don'ts. Try to catch a local meet n' greet (bring your friends/associates) and get to know the local practitioners of OC - one dinner is worth hundreds of posts with the exchange of information.

Sign up for VCDL's free Va-Alerts and stay current with what happening in Virginia and any changes in the laws.

You should also talk yourself into joining VCDL - best $25.00 you'll ever spend - and there are discounts available with membership too.

Build it and they will come! Pick a place where OC is accepted or test the waters quietly, start a new thread with the details about 2 weeks ahead of time, and earn a sticky.

There are a number of OC practitioners in the VB/Norfolk area. There have been a number of meet n' greets in Norfolk, not so much in VB. Perhaps that is about to change. :D

Jim is younger and better looking than I...

MS: You're quite welcome for the cards. Don't hesitate to send that SASE to ED for more cards. They run out quickly!

I'm back in the library today, OCing of course. Internet at home is still down.
Nothing but a smile from the original "for the sake of the CHILDREN" security guard. I guess he went to training and/or got the memo.
Shannon wanted to "OC" my old duty belt (empty of ALL parts)to SCHOOL after Lobby Day.
I thought about it and figured they would find some reason to get mad about it, so veto'ed the idea.

Yes MSC 45acp is older and has fired more brass downrange than I. ;-)

I'm sure you would have gotten a call from the sheriff's deputy associated with that school to come pick up your expelled kid. School administrators even in Virginia are sputtering & apoplectic about such insinuation of rights!

OCed to Ulta with my daughter then had to go CC for other places.

ETA: actually I am not sure if I am younger than Mike. I just turned 48, Mike where in the time continuum are you? He may just "look" older..... Coast Guard harsh waring salt water and all.

I really do like the way Shannon thinks, but suspect your veto/discretion was the better part of valor in this case.

Welcome. I am just a lurker here but i carry in VB all the time. In the last ten yrs i have had just a handful of OC issues . Mostly the simple OMG type. I live in arrowhead so i have hit all the local spots with no trouble at all. That being said i think OC in Norfolk is a pain. Still do it tho. Hit 7-11, Stalmart, and Homedepot on military just this afternoon. Hit me up if your up to an outing at the beach.

Birdneck Shoppes

I'm a bit late with this post, but I was waiting for the FOIA info to get to me. So with that...

January 7th, I've been home in VA Beach from deployment all of 48 hours, and I decided to go down to Birdneck Shoppes at 501 Birdneck, to go to the Smoke Shack there and maybe to 501 City Grill. I went into the Smoke Shack, looked around, bought a cigar, chatted with the cute gal behind the counter about my open carry, and then walked out. It was a gorgeous day, so I lit up right there, and was enjoying the weather. I wandered down the strip mall, casual, just lollygagging as I smoked, and at the far end of the complex, the owner of Motley Mutts got up in my face a bit (to make a long story short). So I walked past him, then turned around and walked back towards the other end where my car was parked, not saying anything more to him than a few words the whole time. I finished my cigar, stopped to buy some Girl Scout cookies from a little girl and her mother, and then as I was walking across the lot, a VB police car pulled into the lot behind me. Sure enough, I heard the officer's voice asking me to stop. The rest of the conversation went something like this (paraphrased to save some writing on my part):

Her: "We had a call about a man with a gun down here. I assume that's you. I see you are open carrying, and that is certainly your right, but I need to verify that you are legitimate to carry, you know, not a felon or anything like that."

me: "Ok."

"So I will need your identification, please."

"No, I'm not going to give that to you today."

"I'm asking for your identification, and you're required to give it to me."

"No, I'm not. There is no code that says I am required to show you identification to just walk around."

"Actually, there's a city code that says if a city employee asks for your ID, you have to give it to them."

(Me, laughing at her) "Now you're making sh*t up. There's no such law."

(Her, frustrated) "Can I get your name?"

"Absolutely." At which point I gave her my name, and spelled it for her.

"And your address?" Which I also gave her. Then she says, "And can I get your social security number?" I started laughing at her again.

"If I'm not going to give you my identification, what makes you think I'm going to give you my social security number? I don't just give that out. No."

So far into this conversation, it was civil and pretty professional, but I could tell she was frustrated with me. She was young, very little (like 5'2"; I'm 6'4"+), and seemed pretty out of her element. So then she says, "Well, for your protection and mine, I'm going to ask you to put your gun in your truck there, and come over to stand next to my cruiser while I run your name. I gave serious thought to telling her no again, but based on her body language, it probably wouldn't have gone well, and I still had a lot of stuff to do that weekend after having just got back from deployment, and getting into it with the cops wasn't on the list. So I bit my tongue, and said, "I can do that." So I did, and after about 5 minutes of standing on the curb texting my brother and chatting with one of the cops who had just showed up as her backup (a third one showed up as I was leaving - must have been a slow day in VB), she said I checked out, and I headed out.

One of the two post-scripts is that I emailed Internal Affairs to recommend to them that they train her a little better, because what she asked for by disarming me was actually not required and not legal. They forwarded it (or said they did) to her supervisor, so hopefully that worked out. I'm happy enough.

The second post-script is that I FOIAed all the documentation, including the 911 call that the owner of Motley Mutts made to the police. Looks like I can't attach it here due to the restrictions of file types on the forum, but I'm happy to send it to whomever wishes to hear it. He embellishes a few things, but my key takeaways were that the dispatcher told him twice that I was legal (nice job!), and that he still insisted that someone come by just to make sure I was on the "up-and-up." I didn't run into or see any of the customers he described in his call, and in fact the conversations I had both inside the Smoke Shack, and with the Girl Scout, were pleasant and a non-issue. So I'm pretty confident in saying he's anti-gun.

Since then, I've been in Walmart, Home Depot, Sakura on Newtown, Farm Fresh on Indian River, Dario's Pizza at Holland and South Plaza (great pizza!), Mi Casita at Rosemont/264, El Taco Loco over by Sam's on the Boulevard, Office Depot and OfficeMax down near Military/VA Beach Blvd, and a few other places around town. No issues. Had a conversation just tonight with a gentleman from FL who was asking how it worked here in VA. Good chat.

Welcome back & thank you.

Sorry you had to experience that shakedown drill, but you did well.

If you don't have a digital recorder yet, I'd suggest you buy one that will run at least 12 hrs on the batteries and will download to your computer. Hard to lose a he said/she said contest when its been recorded. :D

Glad to see that it turned out okay for you. BTW - one reason for the response (three cars) is that this location is practically around the corner from the 2nd Precinct headquarters. This is exactly what I've been referring to in a couple of other threads about the VA BH stop/identify law -- that it is on the books and the LEOs mistakingly believe that the law requires you to produce identification rather than to provide your name/address (and I still think that law is in violation of preemption). I would definitely like to see the FOIA response that you received.

BTW - might be of interest to you to know that you can probably get a better "response" regarding the training (correction) of the officer (subordinates) by raising the issue at the monthly precinct's citizen's advisory meeting -- which for the 2nd precinct is at their building at 820 VA BH Blvd, on the 2nd Wednesday at 7:00pm. I've found those meetings to be quite useful (i.e., attended by press, ask an embarrassing question about why officers aren't properly trained regarding VA BH ordinances) as it is attended by the precinct Captain and I find them to be "motivated" to answer a good question asked (and at minimum I'd bet that you will have at least one Sgt. ask you for more details at the end of the meeting).
