Went to Five Guys for lunch and into Fusion Skate & Surf shop afterwards. No problems at either place.

I wanted to add that there was an armed parole officer eating in Five Guys. He definitely saw my Glock, but didn't say anything.

Went on a road trip

Took the family from the beach to the mountains this weekend. 12 hours round trip, OC the entire time. The only time I didn't have my weapon on my hip was at Grandfather Mountain, apparently it's a State Park now. Either way it was a great trip with many stops at various points of the State, I didn't get a single comment or even a sideways glance.

several trips to wal-mart this past weekend (nothing special there I practically live there) I've noticed alot more stares than usual. Even had some old guy following me and my roommate (he was OCing too) around for a bit. I caught him telling on us to a manager, the manager just blew him off :D

I've been getting more confrontations lately too. I still get the good ones, but lately I've had a lot more stares and people say something about it. I think it's that time of the year where people start taking their "stupid pills"

I don't understand this. They are apparently afraid enough to snitch to a manager, but apparently not afraid enough to follow someone around a store. Doesn't make a bit of sense to me. If I saw someone OCing, I would just take notice and proceed with the shopping... If I were afraid of guns, I wouldn't follow the person around.

What gets to me even more are the people that are apparently too afraid to have you walking around with a gun out in the open, but have no issue with confronting you face to face about it.

The pay to enter area is still private. But there is an admission, so no carry anyway. The backcountry is now State Park. However, most of the trails accessible from the Blue Ridge Parkway are National park as best as I can tell. I carry most of the time on the Tanawha Trail. There is a small section of it that's in the State Park, so you have to know where you are. Honestly, it's kind of a minefield around that area for a gun carrier that's not from around here. Glad you had a good trip. It's beautiful up there. I'm taking the family hiking this weekend in that area.

Ran across an old friend (we'll call him tom) and a friend of his (jerry). the conversation went like this:

Tom: Long time no see.
Me: Yeah, 2007 right?
Tom: About that long, yeah.
Jerry: He's got a gun!
Me: (laughing) Here we go.
Jerry: Why do you have a gun dude?
Tom: Why shouldn't he?
Me: (directed at Jerry) Why don't you?
Jerry: Good questions, I don't know.

There was more to that conversation but that was the important part. I gave them both a flyer and told Tom not to be such a stranger.

Smithfield Dunkin Donuts - Got a coffee and a dozen donuts for my department back at work, before heading back to Wilson. First charge came to $10 and some change .

Then the girl behind the counter says, "Wait."

I look down at the register and see the screen flash "police discount 20%"

I hesitate cause now I am only being charged $8, but I do say to her,"Excuse me, but I am not law enforcement."

She says, "Oh, are you active military?" which I say "No, but I did serve a long time ago."

My Bank of America card states "Miltary Account" too so , she said, "No problem." She never bats and eyelash.

I mean who gets a 20% discount these days? [sarcasm on] That's probably what's ******* off the LEOs, that we are getting their deals and discounts when open carrying.

Kind of funny conversation today. I was in Dollar General buy envelopes. I was standing in line, maybe the 4th person. This older guy walks up and steps in front of me. My first thought was he was cutting through the line to another isle. Then he stands there. OK, that's kind of brazen just cutting right in line. He looks back at me and says he did not realize I was in line. No problem. As I step buy him he says, "Cause cutting in line could get a guy shot." So I look at him and say, "Nah, not for that. I'd get in too much trouble." Made a little small talk and went on. I seem to keep getting into these kind of smart aleck, funny conversations with people when I carry. I guess dealing with the wise cracks beats dealing with the antis though.

I stopped at Arby's on N Main in High Point Monday morning to pick up some sandwiches before headed to my grandfathers to do some yard work. I placed my order and was waiting while they were putting it together when two guys came in to order so I stepped aside to let them get to the register. They ordered and then I heard them say that looks like the same gun Jesse has. I looked over to them and then one of them asked me if it was a .45?

Me: Yes it is.
Them: Is that an M&P?
Me: No, its a Glock.
Them: Cool, have you seen some of those torture tests on youtube where they put it in mud and water?
Me: I have seen some of them, the are pretty cool.
Them: Were those videos the reason you bought a Glock?
Me: They had a part in my decision to go with Glock.

At that point my order was ready and they already had theirs so we exchanged the usual nice talking with you have a nice a day and went our separate ways. I have been fortunate that I have not had any negative reactions to OC'ing and the ones I have had we end up talking guns.

Glad to hear that all of your experiences have been good, that's the way it should be :D I wish I could say the same. I do go a lot of places daily though, and 95% of the time I'm carrying, so I guess I do put myself out for a lot of exposure. I just wish that every experience while OC'ing could be a friendly one =)

Psychoanalysis (just one of the many services I provide)

What gets to me even more are the people that are apparently too afraid to have you walking around with a gun out in the open, but have no issue with confronting you face to face about it.

Here's my theory on this; take it for what it's worth.

Their conscious mind has been trained to believe that guns are evil, therefore anyone carrying a gun (except police) is dangerous. Trigger the big, flashing, red DANGER light. Meanwhile, their subconscious mind is picking up on the OCer's dress, demeanor, behavior, etc. and assesses the OCer as "just a normal guy/gal." So the subconscious' NO THREAT light is illuminated steady green. The observer's mind can't process the conflicting signals, resulting in stress. "I don't feel comfortable. I feel like there is danger and I should be afraid, but I am not in fight-or-flight mode. That guy/gal is the source of my [as yet unanalyzed] stress. If he/she is removed, it will reassure me that my conscious perception is correct, relieve my discomfort, and give me a story of heroism to tell all my friends." The end result is what you have observed: words [driven by the conscious mind] that profess fear, but behavior [driven by the subconscious] which doesn't match the words. Because they haven't analyzed their reactions, they aren't even aware of the contradiction.

I haven't been involved in an encounter of this type yet, but I've given it a lot of thought for the day that it does happen. My plan is to gently point out the logical paradox ("Have you considered that if you were truly afraid, the logical reaction would be seeking shelter or trying to escape? Instead, you've chosen to confront the man you say you're afraid of. Apparently you're not that scared of me after all. Why do you suppose that is?" I don't believe that will win an instant conversion, but it will sure keep them awake for a few nights puzzling. (Love thine enemies. It'll drive them crazy.)

Well good positive open carry at the local wal-mart on new hope and wake forest road, First time for me in a public place too and it went good I was not as nervous as I thought and kinda just browsed in many different places, picked up some pants for work. Also was OC in the yard and neighbor came out and invited me over for a beer and found out he is a big gun guy and had no problem with me OC even though his wife and my fiancee as well as our kids were out playing with the dogs. Great first day for OC.

What are some other good places you are ok to carry in, like taco bell or target.

Glad your first time OC'ing went well! As for other places you can carry, as long as its not against the law, where alcohol is served and consumed, places that charge admission etc., and the place is not posted no guns than you are good to carry. The reaction you get is going to depend on store to store, even within the same chain such as walmart. If you are approached by an employee or manager be polite, and if they ask you to leave then leave without making a scene and contact the manager/corporate after the fact. After a while you forget the gun is there so it becomes more comfortable and casual. Also look into getting a pocket recorder, they have turned out to be quite useful to some people.

Most places you are good to go in. I usually scan the door and to the sides of the door - looking for gun buster signs - before entering. Some places you are not:

Any place that serves alcoholic beverages - no carry whatsoever.

The State Fair is one place you have to go disarmed (they charge an admission). They also have big a** signs on the gates stating that concealed weapons are not permitted. So I'm unsure as to what the status of Open Carrying would be on the State fairgrounds when it is running as a flea market. On the surface, I would say it is good to go with OC, but there may be some site specific rule that I am unaware of.

Many shopping malls have rules against carrying but do not make these rules public nor do they post signage very well. I believe that Crabtree Valley Mall is such a place. I know that Southpointe Mall in Southern Durham has rules against carrying - but you have to look for the rules - they are not posted in obvious places.

The town of Cary prohibits carrying on places such as sidewalks and other town owned property. I have carried openly in Cary, though, as I do not live there and do not frequent the sidewalks. When I am there, which is rare, I tend to be on private property (shopping centers) and have not had any problems.

Chapel Hill also has some odd rules about carrying - and I do not recall them right now. It is another place I do not frequency very often, even though my daughter goes to school there. She does not live on campus so I don't have much need to visit the campus or the town. Since I don't go there much, I don't bother memorizing their stupid rules.

I would expect that most of your experiences while carrying openly will be non-experiences, meaning that nothing worth noting will happen except for whatever activity you are engaged in. If you do have any interactions with someone who makes a comment, I would suspect that most of them are going to be neutral to positive. Most likely, the negative interactions will be the minority. If you happen to be confronted by someone, be confident in yourself and know that you are doing absolutely nothing wrong. Perhaps I should re-phrase that to something more positive: Be confident in yourself and know that what you are doing is absolutely correct and right.

I always have one of the gun rights brochures in my back pocket now. There have been exactly two instances where I wish I had it and did not. Since then I have had one in my pocket but have not handed it out yet - and it's getting tattered - probably time to replace it with a fresh one.

it seems most places I like to go then are open carry friendly i.e. kroger, taco bell, bojangles etc. I am looking for an app on my android that would do just a basic voice recording or I might just use the video recorder. I think I am schooled pretty well as far as how to approach dealing with leo's if the situation arises. So basically nowhere admission is charged, state property, anywhere where alcohol is sold and consumed, and where signs are posted. Has anyone ran into any businesses that did not have signs but had it in there corporate by-laws. I cannot think of one offhand but I have heard of it but it seems most just follow state laws.

Not to be concerned with what their unadvertised (corporate) policy might be. They must inform you in some manner (by sign or verbal) that you are not welcome. When/if that is the case, simply do not patronize them - take your money elsewhere.

OC'D Today in Charlotte,NC

Only two places both sell guns..

Dicks Sporting Goods (University)

Carolina Sport & Arms (South Blvd)

No problems...

I dont plan on OC'ing in any place that is a prime target for Robberies.. ex. I went into a Walgreens today to pick up some Nyquil. I remembered in the past that this place had been robbed several times. I decided to keep my glock locked up in the car..

Same thing as far as Gas Stations.

Walgreens is one of the most OC friendly chains that I know of. The main reason for carrying a firearm is to protect youself and others from serious bodily harm or death. These things happen in many ways including robberies. If this is a robbery prone store then that gives you even more good reason to carry. If you don't have it, it can't help you or anyone else.
