Well dang it! I'm sitting here in Starbucks before heading off to the OC lunch today, and happen to look up and see another guy OC'ing as he's walking out the door. I wish I would have noticed him earlier so I could have talked to him. That's only the third time I've seen someone around VB OC when not at a lunch or something. So if you're were in The Starbucks today near Lynnhaven Mall with a clean shaven head and camo pants, there was a fellow OC'er in there. So, Howdy!!

On another note, since the lunch I went to last weekend I've be OC'ing every where I go without incident or comment from anyone. Only a couple weird looks, and a couple nods and that's it. It's been a great experience so far.

In the white zone? Situational awareness turned off? :p

Well, in my defense I was sitting towards the back facing the door and his strong side was away from me when he came in. But yeah, I probably should have noticed a little sooner. I was a bit wrapped up in reading my wife's email.

On another note, the OC lunch went well yesterday. Thank you Justine for setting that up! It was small, but I met some great people. Later in the Evening I stopped by Wawa's near my house, and a young lady standing behind me in line commented on how nice my sidearm was. I don't mind that kind of attention. I even had a chance to educate her a little bit about OC. All in all a pretty darn good day!

OC'd yesterday to Walmart on P. Anne, no ammo available there except some hunting rifle stuff:banghead:. Stopped at 7 11 on Independence without issue and OC'd over to H&R Block on Holland, no funny looks or funny questions.

Sure sucks to hear about former Seal Chris Kyle and his friend becoming a victim of acts of a mentally ill man, may they rest in peace. We need lunatic control now!

Monster Jam comes to Hampton Roads this weekend! Any laws preventing the oc/cc of a firearm?. Are there rules posted and are they statutorily enforceable?

Reason I ask is 1. Planning on taking the family before I deploy and 2. In Texas (where I spent the last 10 yrs) professional sporting events were statutarily off limits even though the city (who owned the building) was prevented by law from posting prohibitive notices.

TIA

I believe the Hampton Coliseum is owned by the City of Hampton so it should be covered by preemption. I see posts about folks OC'ing to the Circus at the Coliseum with no issues.

While the Coliseum may be owned by the city, the venue (show entity) may set their own rules i.e. no coolers, no firearms, etc. This situation has been much discussed on this forum before.

See Virginia Attorney General formal opinion on this:

The Last Time I Went To Hampton Coliseum

For Slayer/Megadeth/Anthrax there were signs up which amusingly read "No knives, outside food or drink, or professional photography equipment".

Not "weapons". "Knives".

Because the venue is owned by Hampton and preemption does generally carry.

Last time I went, they had detectors at the door. This was last years event.

Liberty tax, applebees, bp, no problems. Had a kid ask his mom, why I had a gun in the restaurant. She just shushed him. Also while in liberty, I had a 20 min conversation, about my firearm. It went rather well.

OC-ed to Tropical Smoothie, Golden Coral, Domino's.

Talked to a customer at Tropical Smoothie while waiting for takeout. He was a CHPr and we discussed OC for a while and I gave him an OC info card. There were lots of people at Golden Coral and had to weave my way between people and tables to eat. While there we ran into our Orthodontist who stopped by to say hi. :) Overall a couple good days of OC-ing.

Colliseum Report

So we went to Monster Jam last night. We decided up front to CC (given the crowds). Got there, no signs and the security at the door was sanding people, some very lazily. I got wanded while I was holding my daughter, clearly had audible on the wand but he never asked any questions. My wife gets wanded and after the wand goes over the guns, she asks if there's anything in a pocket (where the spare mag was) so my wife is honest and after a crazy look or two she says she has to go get it approved. A Hampton PD Sgt comes out and asks to se ID at which time he says they are encouraged to advise people to leave guns I the car but Noone said he had to tell us that so he said, I don't recommend you leave it in the car so enjoy your night. Big kudos to HPD and that awesome Sgt. When he showed up, I did ID to him as well, even though Noone would have ever been the wiser. Next time. Keys go with the mag... I got not a problem with lying to a secuirty guard....

Anything rougher than 80-grit, and I would have left!

:p

Seriously though, pretty interesting encounter. Glad it worked out.

Open Carry in Hampton Roads

Had an interesting encounter today at the checkout line in Target with the lady that was behind me.

Lady - Sir, your gun is showing...

Me - Oh, I know, thank you.

A monument passes.

Lady - So, who are you going to kill.

I was kind of flabbergasted, but I managed a response.

Me - Hopefully no one, I don't ever PLAN in killing anybody.

Lady - Oh, so only if you have too.

Me - Exactly, self defense.

The whole time the cashier was laughing quietly and as I was swiping my card she noticed my "I love guns and coffee" shirt and asked if I really did love guns and coffee.

Me - Of course! It's always a good idea to be alert while you are carrying a firearm.

I got a kick out of that experience so I thought I would share it.

OC-ed to Subway twice, Hess, Walmart and Dicks.

While we were in the area my daughters friend wanted to go into Dicks. I usually seem to miss DJ and he wasn't there today either. :) I walked by the gun counter to see what they had out and of course there were no AR rifles. :-( My daughters friend got something but I didn't spend any money. Sorry DJ.

At Subway yesterday I was leaving and a young man in a minivan driving by (passenger) said "That's a really nice gun!" to which I said thanks its a FNP. I heard the driver ask what I said and I repeated louder FNP but they continued to drive so I don't know if they heard me. Seeing that they were part of a minority group I then started thinking if FNP could be taken in any derogatory way or not. Hopefully they heard the "Thank you" before I said FNP and will google FNP to see FN Herstal. :)

I had Wednesday off. Was the Wife's b-day! :)

No AR's but!!! We just received word that they are going to allow us to sell the Mossberg 930 and the Benelli M4 now! :) One small baby step in the right direction. The store manager always keeps me updated on these things because he knows how involved I am with this stuff. He is a strong supported for 2a rights too... so if you are wondering whether or not you can OC in there.... you can. Once you go into the mall, thats a different story though.

Re: Open Carry in Hampton Roads

I took the wife and kids to Ruby Tuesdays, last night for V Day. Got a really nasty look, from a lady waiting for her seat, but nothing major. I went to Lowes today, to pick up a caliper for case measuring. I had a nice 5 minute conversation with the sales associate. Stop at Desheills, and there pistol caliber section was bare.

I also yesterday, went to a gun store to buy a moslin nagant, and was floored at the price. He wanted 450. Yet the Turkish 8mm Mauser for 275. I'm torn ATM about buying or waiting.
