Re: Open Carry in Hampton Roads

Where was that? Southern Gun Works?

Yes sir. I just couldn't believe when he told me the price, things were that bad. I'm leaning to buying the Turkish 8mm, from him. The guy in there is really a down to earth kinda guy, and was really nice hanging out a little bit after his hours, explaining to a friend I had with me, about the .45 he was eyeing.

I'll pay for service, and they have a lot of neat things in there (Carlos Hathcock's rifles), but price gouging is price gouging and a surplus Russian rifle from 100 years ago should be about $100-150...just my $.02

Hello everyone! New guy here! My wife and I just purchased our first handguns Saturday at the gun show in Virginia Beach. I got a Glock 19 and she got a Beretta PX4. We are both very excited to finally own our own handguns.

Anyway, after researching for a few hours I decided that I have enough info to go ahead and OC today with my wife as we went about our daily business. I planned out the day to ensure that all the places I was visiting were OC friendly. We stopped at Bass Pro Shop to pick me up a different holster then went to eat at Lone Star. So far, no problems. Most people don't even seem to notice which is great.
Afterwards we stopped at Michael's to drop off some frames that needed work and then got some groceries at Farm Fresh. I noticed the cashier there eying my handgun but other than that it was un-eventful. Lastly we stopped at a 7-11 on Fox Hill Rd. before going home to cash in some lottery tickets.

It was a great first day to OC for me! Now if I can just convince my wife to do it with me!

Welcome to the fold. Remember, always put your best foot forward when Ocing. It goes along way in the end. Enjoy your new firearms! :)

Great choices in guns! I have a Beretta PX4 compact and a Glock 23. Both guns shoot wonderfully and are easy to carry. Enjoy and welcome!

Welcome! Hopefully you have been reading the thread for a while and see all the good resources to read.

Since this is your first gun and holster did you get a retention holster? After sitting in a booth with a hyperactive 4 year old boy behind us he kept coming over and getting near my gun I decided to get a retention holster. Also if you get in a fight and go to the ground your gun will stay with you rather than be sliding away. :)

We are overdue for a local OC dinner so keep a lookout for one and join us for some good conversation and good grub. :)

Maybe at the pizza place mentioned in a separate thread, that seems to be pretty pro 2a.

I live across the street from there. I was planning on posting an OC dinner for early-mid March. Since I can walk there, it's easy for me to plan as they have late hours, but I can likely get it so that he opens a little early if I let him know there will be a group coming. I'll keep you all posted once I talk to him (the owner/manager) about opening a bit earlier than 7 or not, just gonna see what our options are. Is that cool with everybody?

BTW... this pizza place is on Holland Road between Rosemont and Lynnhaven (just to give everyone an idea)

Actually the usual start time for an OC dinner is 7pm to allow people time to travel after work. It is not a hard set time by any means but it has worked in the past.

Oh, well I figured we'd shoot for a weekend so work wasn't an issue. If you guys want to do it during the week I more than likely won't be able to participate. So... if you want I can schedule a weekend dinner, otherwise you guys can figure out a weekday dinner.

Schedule it and they will come! If you are going to schedule a dinner you should obviously schedule it when you can attend.

I have met a couple people that can't attend weekday dinners for work reasons so a weekend may work great for some. Heck depending on my kids schedules I may be able to attend. :)

Are you more or less likely to visit a restaurant that gives discounts to those who bring a gun?
More likely

54% (354 votes)

No difference

12% (78 votes)

Less likely

34% (224 votes)

Total votes: 656

While more people are saying that they are more likely to visit the pizza place a side benefit is to keep the anti's away. :) I prefer to dine with other customers that support the 2A and freedom!

At first I didnt, but before I took the weapon out I got a decent leather holster with a strap since I couldnt find a blackhawk holster I wanted. I had one in Afghanistan but it was for my M9.

There should be SERPA's available for any Glock. I use them on most of my guns but have to use a Desantis leather with thumb break for my FNP-45 since they don't make one for it. I actually have come to like the "closeness" of the leather holster and notice the distance away from the belt a SERPA has.

As long as you have something it will work. :)

OC-ed to Chili's last night for dinner and Tropical Smoothie. No issues.

First OC experience

Hey, another new guy on the site here. Bought a Springfield XDm-9 last week. Love it, by the way. My stop was at the Wal Mart in Hampton, off of West Mercury, across from Wynne Ford/Volvo. Decided to ask my roommate's girlfriend to tag along as well. She needed a couple things as well, and I thought it would serve to ease any discomfort I might have felt had I gone alone. Anyways, either I was completely oblivious to any negative reactions, or most people didn't notice, care, or both. Store management or security never said anything, nor did any associates. All-in-all it was a pleasant experience.

Later that night, however, I was in Save A Lot (i think that's what it was) on Orcutt and W.Merc with a Navy buddy of mine, and got a death-stare from the cashier as I walked to the counter. Had I been in uniform as well, maybe it wouldn't have been as bad, but I doubt that. Other than that, nothing. A great first OC experience.

Unfortunately from experience - the one giving you the death-stare working in retail might have absolutely nothing to do with your OC.

I went from a 60k a year career I loved to the depths of the economy failing to land working - retail - Im 42, most I work around are out for their first time and the work ethic has not dawned on them yet, or they dont care - both a common symptom of being young and "full of piss and vinegar" as the saying goes...

More than likely, they had just discovered that their love whom works in the stationary department has been dating the girl from automotive... 8-P

Regardless, sounds like a good outing and don't sweat it.
