Who carries extra magazines? And how?

Usually two magazines in reserve, whatever you want to call em. As Amlevin said, partly as a weight balance to the handgun. Partly for possible malfunction, and for firepower.

I'm really curious when someone here is so quick to posit their opinion as obviously superior, what empirical evidence they have to support their choice. Anyone on this thread ever actually been in a gun fight? And I'm speaking directly relevant to OC.

I haven't.

I use my own judgement, circumstances, training, and the wisdom of those far more experienced in carrying and fighting with firearms to shape my decision.

WOW! thats all I can say about some of the stuff in this thread. havent been on here in a few days. But to address the original question first, for me personally its one in the mag well, 2 extras on me, and like that one guy said....who knows whats in my vehicle?! :) so that brings my total to 46+. I OC mostly depending one where im going, but im licensed for CC so I have an option, everyone's different.....do what feels right to you.

Im not trying to act like Im "all-knowing" or get people mad.....its all my opinion and how I feel I should be prepared. IDK who said what....im not gunna waste my time looking, but on the other end of the spectrum... omg.... using a malfunction as a valid reason to carry extra magazines? really? working the slide on a stovepipe, etc does the same thing while allowing you to remain behind cover without potentially moving around to grab another mag. But whatever I guess.

Also, someone expressed that theres no point in carrying extra mags because theyd be "getting outta there as fast as possible"? makes sense in some situations, yes....but doesnt really seem like you're accounting for ANY circumstance that could take place. like: yer pinned down with very little cover...no way out except past the threat? maybe someone close to you is captive or in harms way? im not gunna go on and on.... but for me personally, id rather have 46 chances, than a measly 16. haha (although, I admit... in most cases you shouldnt even need more than 1-3 rounds)

hope everyone has a good day.

Actually, the idea was that it was the mags fault for the malfunction. I'm guessing by your reaction that you have never had a mag fail on you.

Like all mechanical devices, it does happen when they are used enough, such as when a spring gets worn and it wont feed the last half of the magazine correctly, or the follower gets a burr, or just for no reason at all, or because you forgot to clean it after your last range visit, or didn't put it back together correctly after you cleaned it, or, or, or...

Point is, if you shoot long enough, you WILL have a magazine fail on you. Some people just don't want that to be the silly reason they lost their life, or especially the life of their loved ones.

And as for your comment about not really needing more than 1-3 rounds...well...you really need to do more homework on that one.

Did you find that you had to train around the index safety much?

It felt really natural, no training needed before that I carried a CZ 85 compact and switching from using my thumb to the index wasn't a problem at all.

My carry
.taurus millenium pro .45 w/hollowpoint
12 stack in the pistol and 2 spares(10 stacks) in my houston hardcase belt holder.

The boyscout motto-always be prepared, i may never need the extra ammo but i would be foolish not to bring it. i am never worried about people staring, i personally think there is something wrong with OC/CC when you do not bring spares.

It's like only putting enough gas in your car to make a trip to a specific location and back assuming that there will be no unforseen traffic/vehicle/schedule problems that would cause you to come up empty.

P.S. metalhead didn't we just have that discussion with the video of the guys up north carrying a slung shotgun and the other with a slung AK IIRC. the LEOs came in force but other than to shadow the OCers forlike 20 minutes could do nothing because no law was being broken.

I don't mean to come across as patronizing, but it seems to me that if one carries an autopistol and does NOT carry at least one spare magazine, one does not fully understand how to operate one's chosen platform. One must plan for malfunctions; ergo, one must carry at least one extra mag.

My WYATT gun is a P3AT, carried in a deSantis holster in my strong-side pocket. I carry a second mag in the weak-side pocket, in a deSantis mag pouch (custom modified--by cutting the stitching--to also hold the smallest Ken Onion folder.) This is all totally (and very) concealed; see attached.

This gets demoted to a BUG anytime I'm carrying something more capable--generally a S&W 915 in a Orca holster (concealed or open as circumstances dictate) and a matching weak-side Orca mag pouch (but one custom-requested by me to mount horizontally instead of vertically; it conceals more easily that way.)

Or I might be carrying my SP101 in a Ross leather holster w/Thumb break, and some kind of cheapo pouch holding a speed loader--also on the strong side, since that fits how you use it, right ahead of the pistol itself.

So that's 13 rds .380 always, quite often along with 31 rds 9mm or 10 rds .357.

A couple of reasons. Foremost, is how I dress and what I normally wear the mag ends up concealed. Second, is that I am not one to draw attention to myself in public with the 'bat belt' look.

And furthermore, I carry a Sig, no malfunctions.

Never thought of it that way, I can understand that. Not to try and debate you but do you think people notice the mags over the gun?

I prefer to carry 2 extra mags on my belt for, as others have mentioned, the comfort of having my pistol balanced. I prefer to carry at least 1 extra mag in case of a mag failure. Practical considerations mean that I often don't always carry an extra mag day to day. However, when I have to go to a large urban area or when dressing more casual, I almost always have an extra mag, usually two, on me.

Good advice. If you didn't want to be patronizing you simply could have chosen different words and made it non personal. e.g.

'In my opinion or my understanding of my chosen platform I would always carry an extra magazine because of the chance of malfunction.'

The joys of being left handed... You know that little "5th pocket" inside your right pocket? Holds a mag perfectly if the pocket style is deep enough. So, I always have at least one extra mag on me, in that pocket. It fits both my XD9 and XDm45 mags perfectly.

I always carry at least one extra magazine and keep a couple more in the car. For my 1911 I've got this great single mag holder made of kydex. It's designed to go on like a paddle holster but it locks itself around the belt. I wear it on my 10-11 O'clock so I can get to it easier/faster.
For my USP9c I use a double mag holder made of leather. Also goes on like a paddle holster and snaps to itself.
I learned the importance of extra mags in the Army. Sometimes a specific mag just stops working and will not feed properly. I also bent a couple mags and smashed another for my M4 during my first tour.
I also top my magazines off when I chamber a round.

I normally carry 2 spare mags, one for a tactical reload immediatly after having to defend myself. Say I fire 3 shots out of my 1911 now I am down to 4 rds left not a good place to be at the start of the second round of gun fire. I always want a full mag in my gun if at all possable. I dont know if the guy has five buddys just around the corner that are now really irritated that I just had to shoot their friend.

The second mag is to cover any malfunctions that may happen during a shooting.

I also normally do not OC my mags but sometime I will depending on the circumstances.

I also carry a BUG, I do not carry a spare mag for it.

I didn't see anyone respond to Orphan's post and I want to make sure people see it. He is absolutely correct. Following the initial engagement you always put in a full mag regardless of how many rounds you still have left.

I have several different guns that I carry. I will carry an exta mag with my CZ52, just because there is a pouch built into the holster, and the mags are only 8 round. Two mags for the 52 give you the same amount of ammo as one mag in the CZ85, and slightly more than one mag for the CZ82 or CZ83. My prefered carry these days in the CZ85.

If I am carrying my Colt, I do not carry extra ammo even though it is a 6 shot wheel gun. Yes, I am that confident with that gun.
