I typically carry an XDm 40 but I have occasionally carried a 380 in the past. I would feel far more comfortable stepping into a situation with my 40 than with the 380. While I trust the 380 to defend me from a criminal that is in my face, I would not trust it in a situation that the OP described. Between the low round count (6+1), accuracy issues due to having a sub 3" barrel, and overall weak stopping power I simply wouldn't feel comfortable stepping into a situation as the OP described. With my 40 I probably would, but not with my 380 and it all has to do with the limitations of the gun.
To each their own, but what accuracy issues are you talking about? Those issues you are talking about I assume are where training come in and practice. Most people have a heck of a time hitting with a shorter barrel, however the limited accuracy of a shorter barrel is not even a issue at SD ranges unless the person behind the firearm is not well versed in its use. Basically, a 4 inch barrel and a 2.5 or 3 inch barrel gun are going to both be extremely accurate at 10-25 feet, any issues with hitting with a sub 4inch are going to be from a lack of training and not from a firearm itself not being able to maintain accuracy. And 6 rounds is plenty, a spare mag would help but hey. And as for stopping power I would prefer a 45 myself in a SD situation but again, round placement is a lot more important that caliber IMO but that leads us back to training.
My main point is a lot of people seem to not train enough for what they carry, if you practice like you should your confidence will go up.
