Visiting Family Upstate for Christmas

I've seen a few 'transporting through ny' threads, but none really address my question.

My mother grew up in Corning NY, and has lived here in Northern Virginia for 30+ years. This year I will be riding up with her to visit her family for the holiday season. This family has huge plots of land used for hunting and farming, so they own lots and lots of rifles, but VERY few handguns. And apparently none of them are very familiar with the local laws, so here I write.

What do I need to know if I wanted to keep my Glock locked in the trunk during the drive up, then target shoot on my family's property? Anything in particular I should or shouldn't do?

There's really very little to understand. It's nice that your family owns lots of land but it's quite irrelevent I'm afraid. If you bring a handgun in to NYS without a NYS pistol permit - you will be breaking the law - period. NYS does NOT honor pistol permits from any other state and does not issue permits to non-residents unless you have a very compelling reason like you own a large business in NYS and spend part of the year here. If you are caught with an unregistered/licensed pistol while in NYS - you could be charged with a felony.

p.s. - it doesn't matter if the family here has a pistol permit. The pistol must be listed on their permit for it to be legal. The only way to do that would be to have a gundealer ship it from Virginia to a gundealer in NY who then does the paperwork to add it on their permit. You MUST show custody of the pistol coming into NYS state. You can't just show up with it.

Man...Sorry New Yorkers, but your state kinda sucks. Even though they're just a few miles over the PA border, I don't think I'm gonna risk it. Which sucks, 'cause it'd be my first opportunity to shoot outdoors, and for free.

I appreciate the info. Maybe my luck will change and someone will change a law between now and December

Unfortunately, the laws will not change any time soon. The Liberals are firmly entrenched in NY. Even if they lost a dozen lawsuits, they would follow Chicago in trying to circumvent it with yet another restriction.

Have to agree with both of you. "your state kinda sucks" and also "Liberals are firmly entrenched in NY". Then you add the county by county BS and it really sucks.
