Spokane Rifle Club is Anti-OC

I heard from Robin at Sharp Shooters that the Spokane Rifle Club also doesn't allow OC unless you're a LEO.
Just FYI, the Spokane Rifle Club does not allow open carry unless you are a uniformed police officer. - Robin Ball

From the looks of their posted safety rules, even CC isn't allowed! This is pathetic and ridiculous. "You can practice, but don't dare carry a weapon for self defense!" seems to be the theme.

SPOKANE RIFLE CLUB INC.

Range Procedures and Rules - Saftey Card

1. All actions on firearms are to be open and firearms unloaded except during actual firing procedure.
I'll be contacting them shortly...

Oh my, if it is not one it is the other... Okay... So I could easily be wrong. But these are the only 2 publicly available (don't HAVE to be a member) ranges in Spokane... And both of them didn't allow carrying until a day ago... and both definitly don't allow OC...

Just to clarify, Robinshe sent me that yesterday andI just posted it today. She did say that she was contacting other ranges in the area to see what their policies were and how did those that allowed OC addressed it.

We have also been on the phone to other ranges and dealers to get a read on what they are doing. The more we talk about this stuff the better we can frame the issue with logic versus fear.
I'd say a positive step in the right direction. At least she's not arbitrarily deciding against OC, but making her own intelligent and informed decision and that's all we can ask.

I didn't take her e-mail to justify her not allowing OC, but more of letting me know there was another range that didn't allow OC. Looking deeper at their rules, they actually don't allow ANY carry. Perhaps their rules just need some tweaking and updating. I certainly hope their intent isn't that people should go disarmed to and from the range.

Exactly!!! That's why we need all the help we can get.

I shoot a lot at the Spokane Rifle Club, since it is literally only a 3 minute drive from my house. I have been asked not to OC, and they all know I CC when I get there, cocked and locked.

There are a lot of old timers there, and it seems to me the policy is there for the respect of people who may not be comfortable with it. While I am not a big fan of their policy on "keeping actions open", it has been that way for 83 years.

There are a lot of nice old gentleman and veterans there who are very, very progun and activists about our rights too. These people do write their legislators and Congress, and they do it a lot.

I suppose that may be why I have not pushed the OC issue. I will go down there tommorrow though and put some pamphlets out. I think the issue should be addressed, but I don't think it will change very quickly. Things like that have to be put to a vote, and that takes educating a lot of people and time.

There is another, it's east of Mica. Open from 14:00 to dark, seven days a week, cost is $3.00 (if the guy shows up).

SOP is; show up, start shootin', after a bit a guy shows up (OC'ing a 1911) to collect your $3.00. If he doesn't show, it's free.

Anyone interested in directions - PM me.

Good news. Went looking for it and here is the link http://www.inas.us/svrpc.html

iyellatmytv: There are no images of the public range, but it says it is open to up to 1,000 yards. My question is, are there any stands, or cables, or anything to hang your targets from, or is it bring your own?

It appears to be about a 30+ minute drive from Downtown Spokane. But even after gas +$3.00 fee it is probably cheaper than Sharpshooting or Spokane Rifle Club. (depending on your mpg :) )

The old guy is Joel Carr, he owns the property you are shooting on. The range pictured is the cowboy and INAS shooting area. The range is used by the SVRPC on scheduled days. The public range is covered, does have benches, though rather primitive. Shooting backstops are located at various distances, you close the range and walk to post a target, yes bring your own). Joel is just about deaf, and don't ask him stupid questions. $3 is not to much to pay.

Also, no toilets, and don't piss alongside the road.

WRT to INAS "Safety Regulations" you cannot OC or even CC to a match!

I have a friend that invited me to an INAs shoot and after reading their safety page (http://www.inas.us/SafetyCheck.pdf) saw that it's a "cold" range.

The Safety Check listed on the INAS website requires that since it's a cold range that all guns be unloaded and empty at all times, not handled in cars and only loaded at the range safety area, so basically OC OR CC to the range is not allowed.

That just won't work for me. My carry weapon isthe only one I train with. It would be futile for me to bring a different gun that I don't carry just to compete with, and equally as futile to go unarmed in transit IOT compete with my carry weapon.

BobCav, I had the same issue with the IDPA match I attended. I only have one pistol and carry it daily. So, I had to go to my car, unload in my car and return with it holstered.

I'm sure if you explain your predicament to them, they'll be more than willing to allow you to unload on a firing line so that you're able to comply with their rules. Most gun clubs and match organizers should realize that sometimes it's unreasonable to expect someone to have their carry arm unloaded when they arrive.

Thanks...I haven't contacted them yet, but have noticed thatmany places have similar rules in effect and just haven't thought it through.

May I suggest that these clubs are not anti-OC or CC out of spite or concern but acting out of the demands of their insurers? Too often, gun ranges are under extensive pressure from their insurance companies to have stringent safety rules and facilities in place. Insurance and the expected lawsuit WHEN something happens drive many of these decisions. Lawsuits are shotgun approaches these days: they target everyone from the range, gun manfactuer, range owner, etc. Business owners know what I am talking about. Lawyers don't just sue a sole source, they sue anyone they think will have the deep pockets.

Well in at least one of these ranges case that isn't so as they now allow CC. I would doubt the insurers give a rats a$$ either way. A friend has a private range, actually two, one trap and one rifle and pistol rangeand his insurance thru the NRA doesn't say squat about CC, OC or ahot or cold range.

The "Cold Range" rule is not universal. I have CC'd at Sam's and both OC and CC at Norpoint (Arlington, WA). In both cases they require that you KEEP your gun holstered unless on the firing line.

Go to Everett Sportsman (Eby Island) or Kenmore and it is back to "Cold Range" rules again.
