If I am open carrying my weapon and am stopped by an LEO for questioning does my weapon have to registered? In what sense is it registered?

Gun are not registered in AZ (I believe there is a actually a prohibition in statute on that). Gun owners are not registered, unless you have a CCW permit. And, even if you have a CCW permit, there is no recordation of the type of weapon you carry. If you ever bought a gun and filled out a 4473, you are registered but that's a whole other subject.

On the other hand, "open carry" is legally risky unless you have a CCW permit. And if the situation where you are "stopped by an LEO" involves a vehicle, there are only a few ways that you are not CCW w/o a permit.

Thanks for the advice and information. Generally if I OC in a vehicle I remove the holster and place it on the seat next to me. OC is much easier down here in the SE corner of the state and I only live one mile N of the border.

I am considering getting my CCW permit sometime soon though.

Fortunately, 99% of LEO encounters are good ones relative to guns. And where you are probably hasn't been to Californicated. However, if some "blue flamer" can't see the gun sitting on the seat when they approach your vehcicle (kind of hard to do when you're body is blocking it) you could be facing a misdemenaor arrest. And, no "intent" does not have be proved. If the cop merely sayshe can't see your gun, then it is concealed.

As far as a CCW permit, the governor say "get a permit." Over the last couple of years, we (AzCDL) have knocked down the initial training from 16 hours to 8 hours and have eliminated renewal training and fingerprints for renewal. We're working on making the whole mess irrelevant. If the governor says you need a permit then it should be e-x-t-r-e-m-e-l-y easy to get. We're going to use her veto letters when we press for new legislation next year. It's going to be fun.
