Open Carry Ride for VCDL

I'm looking at getting a poker run together as a fund raiser and get together. As of right now there looks to be some interest from reading about "OC on an MC" earlier and last year.
Since I am a Southside kind of guy, and know where everything is around here. And I have set up Poker runs around here, it will be focussed primarily, as far as the ride, on the Southside. I am looking at the 17th Of September 2011. That way the tourists are mostly gone, it's cooler, we have time to plan and gather stuff for raffles, and give aways. I will get a ride with the 3 stops in between to cover at or about 75-100 miles.
More than that and boredom sets in for people, and less, well the bike doesn't even warm up...I could post the stops right now, but I will get out and talk to them, and see if they want to do any specials, or even if they mind being included in the ride plan.
Just because you don't ride doesn't mean you aren't included, there are numerous things that are a big help with the execution of a good poker run. (Being card dude/dudette for instance at the stops)
Here are a few thoughts:
$10 per bike, $5 per extra rider/extra card
Last stop at a barbeque place for food, and beverages
All stops at places where "adult beverages" aren't the main focus I.e. Border Station, not Bone Shakers... ;)

Any thoughts or ideas are welcomed. This is OUR deal, not mine.

Open Carry Ride for VCDL
While I do not speak for VCDL (only the president does). VCDL "typically" does not support "Open Carry" events.. They support "legal carry" events. Just like they are non partisan, they are also non oc/cc carry specific. So if you have a "Gun Ride" i would imagine they would/could endorse it. If it is an "OpenCarry" ride, This message board might give you the blessing, but VCDL may not. (VCDL does not endorse my OpenCarry dinners or my OpenCarry little pick-up either.. even though almost all attendees to both are VCDL members.

More clearly, VCDL would support a "Ride for VCDL" and just leave it up to the participants as to whether to carry at all and how to carry. Most will choose to open carry whether we encourage it or not - that's great, let freedom ring!

VCDL Fundraiser Ride

Okay, after the few posts, will change the Name. Makes good sense, understand the reasoning...Having said that, there doesn't seem to be much interest. If there isn't any interest, I will let it die. If there is some interest, but no one wants to discuss it, well I guess that's okay as well. Like I said, I can't do it alone, so if no one wants to do it. I'll let it go.

Having such a ride in Surry COunty four days after Skidmark's trial would be a huge statement. Outnumbering the blue meanies on the ferry ride would be a thing of beauty.

Skid, the ogre, having a speaking role while OCing around the harbormasters office would be classic.

The general population of Surry County consist of good, friendly, easy to like people.

Surrey House Restaurant is a great place to eat and they are very "friendly."

Personally I encourage a Ride for VCDL including taking the ferry - OC, CC or noC, personal option.

You are running into the same problem that I had when I tried to set up something like this before. Between differences of option in the length of the, location, and how far some had to travel just to get there, I ended up just letting it drop. Maybe the idea of a ride on the Saturday after Skidmarks Trial would get more people to come out for this. I be there if I can.

I'm willing to pencil that in.

Coming from trhe PRM, though, I would need to think on my options.

Keep me posted

Red Dawg,

If you decide you have enough interest to do the ride the weekend after Skidmark's trial and are committed to doing it, then I can put it out on VA-ALERT to bring in even more people.

It would be nice if it could end at a park for a picnic or something. VCDL could probably arrange for the hot dogs/burgers and fixings. Skidmark could address the group. I know that Peter Nap has been documenting as much as possible. He, too, might want to speak at the event.

The only place suitable for a picnic is Chippokes Plantation State Park which IMO would not give much exposure. OTOH Surrey House Restaurant is just around the corner from the Surry Court House (on the main drag) and has a room that could handle a very large crowd - the owners are very pro/friendly. That would be my recommendation.

Do you have an start location and time in mind yet? I should be able to do this ride if it is on the 17th and the start time is late enough that I can get there from my Fire Station in Fairfax. I am normally out of there a little before 7am as long as I am not on a call. I work on the 14th, 16th and 18th the week of Skid's trial, I love 24 hour shift work but sometimes it makes it hard to attend events.

Sounds like a good idea since they have that large room and are close to Surry.

I'm not a rider (at least not in this sense of the term...), but I was reading through this thread, and it seems that there are inherent logistical problems when you want to organize a "Ride", when all the potential participants are from all over the place.

I was trying to think of solutions... I came up with two, only one of which is likely to be practical.

1) Set up a circuit course, that covers a good portion of all those who wish to participate. Then start at a particular place at a particular time, and ride the circuit, picking up those who you can along the way, then at the end of the circuit, those who were picked up later would simply continue on until the last picked up finally arrived home.

2) Probably the better idea, given the desire for fellowship among all... don't do a "Ride", but instead a "Ride-In!" Seems that it was already gravitating in that direction, organize an event at one point, then everyone just rides in (perhaps via a course that has been designed to pass by as many of those interested as possible, encompassing some of the "pick-em-up-as-you-go" idea in #1 as well), and then once at the final destination, have lunch, or whatever!

Just some thoughts...

After a recent trip to Bermuda, I was thinking about buying one of those little scooters... would that count? :) Some of my co-workers (who have real bikes) pretty much laughed at me over that idea...

Another idea that would vastly increase participation: expand this beyond just just bikes. The antique car club and the 4x4 club I'm affiliated with both do poker runs.
