AzCDL Annual Meeting of Members, Tucson, October 5, 2013.

Fred

Figured I would give this a bump, and would like to ask how many of you on this forum will be going? I'm definitely looking forward to putting names with faces, and seeing all those scary-looking, incredibly deadly, Wild West-shootout OC guns we keep hearing about:rolleyes:.

So by a show of hands, err, posts, who's already set their alarms and are worrying about what (gun and holster) to wear?:lol:

Another bump

Only one week left to pick out, polish, and clean your carry piece and its holster (as well as any accessories that should accompany it, like recorders, video cameras, extra magazine/speed loader, etc).

Re: Open Carry Luncheon

Sadly, can't make it this year - previously committed to another outing. HOWEVER - for those who want to go, there is still time to get tickets. The deadline is September 29th IIRC? :thumbup:

That's too bad. Best wishes with your outing.
And yes, this Sunday, September 29th is the last day to buy tickets.

No rifle open carry?

The tasteful open carrying of holstered firearms is appreciated

First off, OC of pistols is not prohibited here is AZ. So I would venture to say the "holstered firearms" bit says no, (MAYBE) if the rifle is holstered/sleeved? Or you can just ask AZCDLFred.
Not wanting to go off topic or violate any forum rules here.

*Edit* The wording I chose gave the wrong impression. I mentioned the bit about pistol OC not being prohibited in AZ because that automatically makes talk of long gun OC against the forum rules here on OCDO (reason for the last sentence of my post). Also, azcdlfred kindly reminded me of the fact that the event is a luncheon, and should not be used as a means of protest. I apologized for sounding like I endorsed long gun OC at the event. I can see where it may have its use/purpose, and the luncheon is not one of those places. There's a time for everything.

This is not a public protest gathering to see how far one can push the limits of the law and good taste.

This is the private AzCDL annual meeting of members. It's a fellowship gathering of AzCDL members in a hotel banquet room (sit-down dining) we reserved to celebrate our success. Arizona is an open carry state. You are welcome to carry loaded handguns properly holstered.

Regarding tickets:
1. Must be a member or guest of a member.
2. Tickets will NOT be sold at the door.
3. Deadline for ticket purchases is Sunday, September 29, 2013.

We are giving away 4 handguns as door prizes.

I didn't mean to sound like I was encouraging long gun OC. But I apologize.

When I read that I'd gotten all excited, until I remembered I'm still not 21.:(
But I still get to put names with faces (hopefully) and see what other armed LACs in Arizona do when they aren't trying to keep their guns from going of the leash and hurting people all on their own.:rolleyes:

I won't be going (Tucson is just too far away [4-5 hours] to make it). I will be doing my part, however, working the AZCDL booth at the Western Collectables & Gun Show, at Tim's Toyota Center, in Prescott Valley.

That's a shame (the not being able to make it part).:( Besides FreeInAZ and azcdlfred, I was hoping to meet you, MAC702 (if he was in the area), SonoraRebel, and Paver1055 (among others).

You'll probably see me when you get to the door collecting your ticket. Look for the white beard and handlebar moustache.

White beard, handlebar mustache. Got it.
Now I just need to survive the rest of the week (quizzes, essays and poems, oh my!).
Also sending you a PM.

Anyone else as excited as I am?:)

Too bad I will not be able to attend this year. Family obligations in Wisconsin.

I had a good time at the GRPC. Have to take care of my Mother in Wisconsin. On my way there next.

Main Gate Garage- No Guns?

Saw the email regarding free Saturday parking available at the Main Gate Garage. That's University property. Is it No Firearms (still)?

That's what I though when I first heard about it, especially given the campus policy:

http://deanofstudents.arizona.edu/otheruacampuspoliciesandprocedures

Scroll down to the third entry from the bottom ("Weapons, Explosive Devices, and Fireworks on Campus"), or follow this direct link to the University of Arizona Police Department (UAPD) PDF:
http://www.uapd.arizona.edu/WeaponsOnCampus.pdf

WeaponsOnCampus PDF said:
Violations
The chief administrative officer, or an officer or employee designated by the chief administrative officer to maintain order, may order a person to leave the property of an educational institution if the officer or employee believes that the person is committing any act or has entered the property with the purpose of committing any act that disrupts the lawful use of the property by others at the educational institution.
Violations of ABOR Policy 5-302 to -303 of the Code of Conduct are enforceable against all University of Arizona employees, students and visitors. Any use, possession, display or storage of a weapon, explosive device or fireworks on the property of the institution after a reasonable request to remove the weapon, explosive device or fireworks interferes with and disrupts the lawful use of the institution’s property by others. Persons in violation of any lawful order to remove the weapon or to leave the property are subject to arrest by a peace officer for interference with or disruption of an educational institution, ARS 13-2911(A)(3).
WeaponsOnCampus PDF said:
Enforcement
Violations of this policy by University students, faculty and staff will be considered misconduct, subject to disciplinary action in accordance with ABOR policy. Violation of this policy by members of the public may result in ejection from the property and/or confiscation of the weapon, dangerous instrument used, displayed or possessed. Violations may also result in arrest for applicable state statutes.
Confiscated weapon(s) or instrument(s) may be sold, destroyed or otherwise disposed of in accordance with Arizona Revised Statutes. All seizures of prohibited items will be carried out within current policies regarding the processing of evidence.

Could it be an intentional "oversight"? Maybe we're being set up? I sure wouldn't put it beneath the antis.
On the bright side (sarcasm), there are exceptions:
WeaponsOnCampus PDF said:
Exceptions
Exceptions to this policy include:
 Peace officers certified by the State of Arizona and currently employed by an Arizona law enforcement agency performing official duties;
 Peace officers certified by the State of Arizona in an off-duty capacity and currently employed by an Arizona law enforcement agency;
 Any law enforcement officer working under their color of authority.
 Weapons used in authorized academic programs for which prior approval has been obtained from the Dean or Department Head, Provost and Chief of Police or their authorized representatives;
 Any other activity that has been given prior written approval by the Chief of Police and authorized University representative.
However, we should be ok if the UA chief of police has granted us an exemption (lay on the sarcasm nice and thick at "granted"). Plus, they provide the proper procedure for begging for permission:
WeaponsOnCampus PDF said:
Request for Exceptions
Any request to use, possess, display or store a weapon on University property in connection with official University business must first be reviewed by the responsible Dean or Department Head. The Dean or Department Head may comment and shall forward the request to the Provost for review and comment. The request must then be forwarded to the Chief of Police of The University of Arizona Police Department in writing at least ten (10) days prior to the intended date of such use, possession, display or storage and must:
 Identify the purpose of the request;
Identify how this request furthers the mission of the University;
 Identify the weapon;
 Identify the duration of the request;
 Identify a responsible person;
Identity how the weapon will be secured;
Identify how the weapon will or may be used.
The request will be evaluated by the Chief of Police, or his/her designated representative, and a written decision rendered within ten (10) working days. If the request is approved, the approval will include any conditions or restrictions necessary to require safety and consistency with the intent of the Arizona Board of Regents policy. If approval is given for an indefinite period of time it must be reviewed annually and renewed by the requestor. The University of Arizona Police Department will keep all approved requests on file and available for confirmation by police officers.
Bolded and underlined formats are added by me. The underlined portion, I could probably have fun with if I start typing right now.;)

It also doesn't help that they decided to hire more officers, but they are currently undergoing training and won't be deployed until after it has concluded:
http://www.wildcat.arizona.edu/m/article/2013/09/uapd-sees-increase-in-number-of-police-officers
(just ignore the grammatical errors and bias; those seem to be the norm from the statist students comprising the majority of the "staff" of the school newspaper, a few actually take the job seriously).

Of interest: the UA web page has not been updated since 2012, and the UAPD file was last revised in 2009. I was unable to find a more recent policy, and several components of the UAPD website are up-to-date.

Property owned by U of A but not part of the "school" and is not posted. University proper starts with a wall about a block away.

Parking structure is unattended on Saturday - that's why it is free parking.

Quick recap: Jan delivered a very lively speech about the need to actively introduce women to the world of firearms, it was announced that Charles will be stepping down from his post but will continue to fight the good fight in another capacity, Dave spoke about his interesting legislative experience this year (hint: bright lights, surrounded by superbugs and vampires), John Kavanagh spoke a bit about the legislative process, and I learned that Duke was the only person in attendance that had no need for a microphone.

Good food and service from the Marriott staff, a very fitting a Capella duet, some great door prizes, and a plethora of pretty holsters holding even prettier toys (well, insofar as Glocks and Sig Sauers can be called "pretty":p). One particular silver-gripped 1911 in attendance with its owner has been on this Earth since the Great War. Needless to say, a great time had by all.

I also got to meet AZCDLFred and his lovely wife, and it served as a reminder that you never know what someone you meet on the Internet will look like. When he said "white beard and handlebar moustache", I kind of imagined he would look like a more furry version of this guy:
http://www.howretro.com/2011/09/handlebar-moustache.html

Looking forward to next year's luncheon, as well as any OCDO-organized get-togethers here in AZ.
