TechnoWeenie, What are your thoughts on this product:

It's the Uniden BCD996T.

That is the base/mobile version of the one I have, the 396.  The 996 has a few more features than my hand-held has, although Uniden has recently released a control head for the 396 that looks similar to the 996.  I think those are the only ones that can receive Tacoma and McChord AFB trunked radios, but I really don’t know for sure.

Correct, for the most part.

The 396 and 996 ARE mobile/handheld cousins.

There is GRE, which makes their scanners for Radio Shack (Pro-96/Pro-2096) which now have their own versions which are the PSR-500 and PSR-600, which are far superior to the older 96/2096.

Both the Uniden and GRE products are great, but they WILL take some getting used to, as they operate differently from a conventional scanner with 'banks', even for me, it took a few days to get the hang of it. I've installed quite a few 996's for agencies that needed to hear other agencies, but didn't need to talk to them.

The HUGE advantage of the 996 is that it has a GPS input, where you can set zones to automatically switch channels/sets based on your location.... In addition there is support for two-tone paging, so a firefighter/department can set it to unmute ONLY when their department/apparatus gets paged...
