I happened to notice that Larimer County does not accept online courses when I applied for mine. Not sure about other counties.

I personally paid extra for a class that included some range time. I think even if you're an experienced shooter, you might as well see if you can pick up some pointers from somebody more experienced. I definitely incorporated a few training and marksmanship things that I learned from my CCW class. But if you have already had professional training, I could see trying to save the money and time.

I have nothing against training at all. I think everyone can benefit from training. My issue is with the sheriff not accepting on-line training. Colorado law states that the applicant has the discretion in selecting which training class to complete. Furthermore, statute does not list what constitutes as acceptable training. Live fire is not a requirement.

I don't think that training should be a requirement to begin with but that is a whole other topic.

I recently had to renew my permit with Arapahoe County. While I was waiting my 4 hours to get a simple renewal, a lady came in with online training credentials. The clerks said that the Arapahoe County Sheriff does not recognize online training and she was sent away.

Thanks, I will send them a letter also. I've already spoke with Adams county. They do not care that they are not acting in accordance with state law. I'm sure Arapahoe will be the same.

Letter sent to Arapahoe Sheriff.

Arapahoe County Sheriffs,

Hello, my name is Beau. I am writing to you to discuss information I received on your policy regarding acceptable training to qualify for a CHP. The information I received stated that you rejected a training certificate from an applicant who had received training through an on-line course. I would like to point out that position is in violation of Colorado state law.

The relevant section of Colorado Revised Statutes that deals with the issuance of concealed handgun permits is C.R.S. 18-12-203.. In this section it states that the applicant has discretion of selecting which handgun class to complete. By refusing to accept on-line training as meeting the requirement for a CHP your office is violating that statute. By doing so the sheriff’s office may be opening itself to legal action.

I would ask that you change your policy to accept on-line training certificates in order to bring the policy in accordance with state law. Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,
Beau
