FBI Head Wary Of High Court's Gun RulingCampus Safety Could Be Jeopardized, Director Says Of Landmark 2nd Amendment Case
(AP)FBI Director Robert Mueller on Monday criticized the U.S. Supreme Court's recent ruling that Americans have a right to own guns for self-defense and hunting, saying it may harm efforts to deter violent crime.

Speaking at a convention of the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators in Hartford, Mueller said the ruling "does throw a lot of things up in the air."

By a 5-4 vote last week, the nation's highest court struck down the District of Columbia's 32-year-old ban on handguns, the first major pronouncement on gun rights in history. It upheld the right for communities to license guns.

Mueller said communities will have to determine their own license programs. As a former Marine who served in Vietnam, he said "I tend to believe weapons harm people and more often than not they harm the people carrying them."

With his grandchildren going to college, Mueller said he hopes "those campuses will be weapons free."

Mueller said the FBI's top priority remains counterterrorism, counter-intelligence and protecting the secrets of the United States.

He said college campuses and small communities could be "potential incubators of terrorism" even while major cities such as New York and Los Angeles remain primary targets for terrorists.

"The fact is we can't rule out any community in the United States as a potential incubator of terrorism," Mueller said.

Aye, another person in a position where their opinion really doesn't matter.

Again the deference "law" and opinion. If he doesn't like the ''law'' he needs to get out of law "enforcement". We all know, or most of us know, the peoples safety is the least of there worries. Subjects are hard to herd when they can shoot back. If he's worried about his grandkids. He should teach them to defend themselves. The "law enforcement" folks can't. For gods sake, man up Mr. Director.

In case anyone wonders why I don't wave the flag and put "support the troops" stickers all over my bumper, I present the above. As a former Marine myself, and thus having known countless Marines and Navy sailors, I find no direct correlation between serving the federal government and understanding what, exactly, it is we're supposed to be protecting, namely the individual liberty of the citizens of the U.S.

Mueller is a disgrace to the Corps and obviously not fit to be a LEO.

No one this paranoid should be in charge of any police agency.

You see, this is very wrong. Law enforcement should remain apolitical.

We know where this goes, right? Political enforcement by para-military forces - yuck.

In reference to "Citizen Mueller's" remarks , I have just e-mailed my Senators & Representative in the House with the particulars. I requested a "wing clipping" for this tyrannt , along with his twin brother who heads the BATFE. This Mueller guy must think he's the reincarnation of J. Edgar Hoover -for Pete's sake. NO MORE "WACO" or "RUBY RIDGE" tragedies ! Unbelievable ! This guy swore an OATH to UPHOLD the Constitution of the US. Fire him ! (Anyone have a link to this AP story?)

I was once told by one of my Marines (I'm in a joint unit), "Once a Marine, always a Marine." But I must agree with your general assessment. That's why I teach my troops about the history of the founding of our great nation, The Constitution of the United States and its Amendments. I also give them a little homework assignment before I reenlist them or promote an officer - they must memorize the oath. It's so fundamentalthat I am saddened at the number of service members who never give it a second thought.

Amen.

I served as a Navy enlisted man, then in the Air National Guard, and finally as a Naval Officer. I took the enlisted oath for the first time in 1978 and the commissioning oath in 1989. I handed out pocket-sized copies of the Constitution to any sailor who would take one when I was cashing their checks in my disbursing office. Although I resigned my commission in 1995, I can still recite that oath by heart. Like many former military officers, even though I have resigned my commission, I have never relinquished myself from that oath.

I understand that there will be differences of opinion regarding what is best for our nation, but when those who are either elected or appointed to office under to the United States violate their oath to support and defend the constitution, it saddens me.

That the 2nd Amendment is an individual right is clear as has been confirmed by the Supreme Court. FBI Director Robert Mueller should be supporting and defending the Constitution, not fighting it.

I, [name], do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter. So help me God.

Good for you! I also would like to think "once a Marine, always", but my higher loylaty is to liberty and truth first, and to the Corps second. My loyalty to the Corps therefore depends on the Marines, their behavior and their loyalty to the principles of liberty.

When people ask me if I "support the troops", I tell them that it depends on the individual troop. The Marines who throw puppies off cliffs or who become gun-grabbing FBI directors? I don't feel a need to support those troops.

Any further discussion about this is off-topic and involves other touchy issues, so I'll shut up now.

All the more reason to carry on campus!

But, you really have to love the subtle threat that if you carry a firearm, this man will consider you a terrorist suspect.
