I've been carrying openly in Asheville for several weeks now.

No one has raised any objection until yesterday . My sister and her boyfriend were in from Illinois.

We were heading out of town to visit some waterfalls and stopped off at Jersey Mike's to pick up some sandwiches. My sister's boyfriend noticed the gun on my hip (it took him a while) and I heard him talking to her behind me, expressing his discomfort. I just went ahead and ordered.

The guy behind the counter just thought it was interesting that I was carrying.

"Are you a detective?"

"No, I'm just a guy."

"You're lying."

"No, really. It's legal to openly carry a firearm in NC, as long as you are legal gun owner."

Then I gave him my card. I'm a Martial Arts instructor. He asked if he could still train with me even if he has no martial arts experience. I told him that I actually prefer it that way, and told him to give me a call.

So then I walked back outside where my sisters boyfriend is nervously waiting by the car. He asked me if I would mind putting the gun away, because he had an issue with guns. I told him, " I'm not trying to make you uncomfortable. Guns are a serious issue, they put holes in people. I usually carry this when I go out for the protection of my family. Anyway, we're going to a state park, and I can't carry it there."

If we had not been going to a state park I'm not sure what I would have done. It definitely would have put a damper on our day because he would have refused to be around me if I didn't take it off. I only get to see my sister once a year by the way, and wouldn't want to spoil the 3-day visit over this issue. She said nothing about the incident either way.

Now im confused. I just took my CC class a couple months ago and our trainer told us that as of Jan this year it is now legal to carry in State Parks. Pretty sure thats correct but would like to know others knowlege of this here.

If memory serves, we can carry in a National park, but not a State park

Carried around Clayton/Garner today shopping for new tires.

One salesgirl kept glancing down at my SA, one guy asked me if it was a .40. When I responded that it was a .45, he asked if it was so i could kill two people with one shot. I didn't respond, as I didn't feel like starting an argument.

On a side note, I found out my ball joints are shot. :( Rough estimates put it at ~$1100. Never done it before, but I'm considering doing it myself. First time for everything, right?

First time OCing in my local drugstore, there to pick up a couple of prescriptions. I know the pharmacist who checked me out, and saw no strange looks or anything from the rest of the pharmacy staff. I found out later that after I left, they were apparently freaking out a little bit, and she told them I was a security guard. (I'm not.) I went back there today to pick up another rx, again didn't notice any problem, though it was hard to suppress a laugh when I remembered what happened before.

8/2 OCd around town, ended up at the ABC store to pick up a housewarming present to myself after moving into the new apartment (A whole other story - http://forum.opencarry.org/forums/showthread.php?78786-Apartment-Rule-I-didn-t-see-in-the-contract. )

Anyway, first time I haven't been carded at the store. They usually run the license in those nice little machines they've got. I turned 21 in January. The clerk just asked me how old I was-after the purchase and the bag was in my hand.

8/3 Went into Ingles to get some groceries, saw that a cashier noticed it on the way in, though didn't appear to be bothered by it. I finished my shopping and saw that his register was open, so I went there. He asked if it was a .45 (it is) and then if it was a glock (it isn't). I told him it was the Springfield XD, and we got to talking about how he wanted to get one and OC (he's under 21). He ended up telling me that he is going to a tea party meeting at a local pizza joint on Thursday. I didn't know about it and will now be going, thanks to him. I didn't have any of the NC Gun Rights pamphlets with me (Forgot to pick them up from next to the printer on the way out the door, again!!:cuss:) but will be taking them to the meeting provided I remember to grab them.

Also, as a side note, I think it would be nice if we could get this thread a little more active. The one on NoVA (http://forum.opencarry.org/forums/showthread.php?38118-Open-Carry-in-NoVA) is much more active, and I have resorted to that to get a sense of others' experiences. In addition to being helpful to those of us who currently OC, I think it would be helpful to those who may be considering it, but are worried about public reactions.

Just my .02

so yesterday I went to Kmart in Conover. Ocing my SA XD40sc with my 2 kids with me. When we got out of the truck the couple in front of us the man was also OCing. This was the first time I have seen someone else OC. Well he had a full size on his right hip 2 spare mags on his left hip and.... in the middle of his waist... hand cuffs.. only one cuff showing the other was inside his pants... He never saw me.. My son ask if he was a cop and I told him that I HIGHLY doubt it... Off duty cops CC and dont stick cuffs in there pants like that... Just some Hispanic wannabe looking like a cop... I didn't talk to him cuz I just wasn't liking the vibe he gave off..

can anyone give the statute, about not being able to carry in a state park? i know you can't carry concealed, but how about open?

Without looking up statute, I can tell you from experience that pretty much all NC state parks have signs as you enter which state that firearms/weapons are prohibited, so that pretty much kills any possibility of legal carry right off the bat.

EDIT: A recent OC experience of my own:

I went to Pet Innovation with my wife & daughter on Saturday 7/31/10. This is a small pet supply store located in the Target shopping center on New Garden Road in Greensboro. The employee I encountered was very much pro-2a. He was surprised to see me open carrying (He didn't know that this was legal), but didn't seem unnerved in any way, and was even asking me about what kind of gun I carry (this particular day it was my Kimber Tactical Custom II, which also happens to be my avatar pic here as well). Apparently he is a gun owner also :)

Also, I'd like to once again remind you guys about www.friendorfoe.us

This is a great site to utilize in helping catalog/track where we have both positive and negative OC experiences. I've been pretty active on posting stuff there in Greensboro. Most of the Greensboro tags on the map are mine. The more we work together on building up the data on that site, the more it will benefit us all. It is much easier to look stuff up there than it is to search through forum threads. Still tell your stories here, but ALSO enter the business @ friendorfoe. Thanks!

i wanted to make sure, but i thought it was legal to go to a place where alcohol was sold but not consumed

2) Any establishment where alcoholic
beverages are both sold and consumed.
(14-269.3)

if you have something else that applies i would appreciate getting the correction

It's legal as your quoted post states, but ABC in most NC stores has a 'No Weapons Allowed' posted on the door.

Not that I would ever enter an establishment CC that's posted, but glad I have my CC sometimes...

Ruger, thanks for the tip. I hadn't seen this site before but I put about 20 over NC in today. I was surprised to see how little Raleigh had been covered. Maybe the proximity to Cary? IDK, but I'd like to see it get more active. It's a great idea.

ABC stores are state owned and operated facilities, right? Carrying a firearm is not permitted in a state building. Even if this were not the case, the signage reads "No Weapons Allowed" or "Weapons Prohibited", so this would preclude OC. I've never seen an ABC store with a "No Concealed Weapons" sign.

The one I went in had no sign against carry of any type-concealed or otherwise.

Could you point me to the statute on state buildings other than the Capitol Building, Executive Mansion, Western Residence of the Governor, or a building housing any court of the General Court of Justice? (and the grounds of aforementioned buildings)

§ 14‑269.4. Weapons on State property and in courthouses.
See http://www.ncleg.net/EnactedLegislation/Statutes/HTML/BySection/Chapter_14/GS_14-269.4.html

This is from http://www.ncdoj.com/getdoc/32344299-a2a7-4ae5-99fd-9018262f64ac/2007-NC-Firearms-gun-Laws.aspx
, though it only specifies concealed.

7. Even with a permit, you may not carry a concealed handgun in the following areas:
a. Any law enforcement or correctional facility;
b. Any space occupied by state or federal employees;
c. A financial institution;
d. Any premises where the carrying of a concealed handgun is prohibited by
the posting of a statement by the controller of the premises;
e. Educational property;
f. Areas of assemblies, parades, funerals, or demonstrations;
g. Places where alcoholic beverages are sold and consumed;
h. State occupied property;
i. Any state or federal courthouse;

So would that mean that even temporary occupancy would apply? If a state trooper walked into McDonalds, would it then be illegal to carry there? That is the way the law reads....
