Man robs South Portland sewing shop with hammer
Police say a man robbed a sewing shop with a hammer in South Portland Wednesday afternoon.
Around 1:15pm, police were called to Kim's Alterations on Ocean Street. The man reportedly threatened the owner of the store with a hammer while demanding cash. Witnesses say they watched the man enter a vehicle on a side street.
A description of the vehicle was passed on to available units. A Marine Patrol officer heard about the vehicle being sought and spotted it on Spurwink Road in Cape Elizabeth.
Police stopped the car and questioned 23-year-old Stephen Scala of Portland. He was charged with armed robbery and taken to the Cumberland County Jail.
There are no reports anyone was hurt.
The Cumberland County Jail said Wednesday that Scala was being held on $50,000 cash bail.
