I've OCd to get my hair cut, look around Gander Mountain, fill up with gas, eat at Steak n Shake, and get beer from Drake Party Store. No issues anywhere. Guy at the register asked what I was carrying and we talked about Glocks and shooting while he rang me up.

Been awhile since I have posted. Been mostly OCing for the last several weeks with little to no reaction from people or places. Most of the usual stops are already acclimated to me and my sidearm, since I am a regular. Wal-mart, McDonalds, Speedway, Home Depot, Leo's Coney Island and quite a few other places see me and my Sig quite frequently so they pay little to no attention.

However this last week 2 things stand out 1 good, 1 bad.

Starting with the bad.

Was at Speedway getting gas and cigs for the wife and myself. I was entering the store as a group of women were leaving. I held the door open for them trying to be a gentleman. They smiled and said "Thank you" as they were leaving. Their little girl (5 or so) pointed out my sidearm to her mother as they left. I gave it no further thought. I went in and paid for my items, said hello to the workers who I know and left.

My son who was sitting in the car waiting for me immediately upon seeing me exit the store started telling me as soon as I entered the store the lady apparently got out her cellphone, dialed 911 and proceeded to tell them how a man with a gun in his hands entered the Speedway gas station. How he MUST be up to no good and they need to send police before someone gets killed. She was scared and leaving with her kids before she dies.

I laughed, filled the tank with gas and we left. About 1/4 of a mile down the road headed home we saw a Police car with lights and siren headed toward the Speedway we just left.

The next day talking to the employee that had been working the police did indeed show up. She told them the lady that called was a crackpot cause I am in there everyday and my sidearm never leaves it's holster. They left and nothing more has been said on the issue.

Now the Good

Was having lunch with my son at Taco Bell and noticed a man sitting in the corner staring at me and my sidearm. This continued until he was finished eating. He got up and passed by the table and then stopped. Turned and asked if I OCed all the time. I replied "Usually". He then thanked me for being brave enough to help support his rights, despite the public and police resistance I must get.

I told him it's not as bad as you think. The police have slowly been educated on the legality. A vast swath of the public has been desensitized and educated as well. I told him to check out MOC and here. He said he's wanted to for a few years but hasn't been brave enough to do it. I offered to accompany him any time he wanted to test out the waters.

I did humbly suggest he read, read and read some more on the laws. He agreed, said he would do some more research and thanked me for taking the time to talk to him and left. Hopefully another OCer was born.

The positive interaction made me feel good :)

Greetings fellow gun enthusiasts. This is my first time posting. I've been following numerous threads on OCDO for a few months now. I'd like to give a little background before I share my most recent OC experience.

I've had my CPL for a few years now, and until a few months ago I never considered OC other than while hunting. Three separate events prompted me to start looking into OC. The first was while traveling with my family. We had stopped at a Wendy's for lunch. I was CC'ing at the time and my wife and I noticed a gentleman in line to order who was OC'ing. She asked me quietly if that was legal, and I responded that I was pretty sure it was but I couldn't be positive. There was an older couple with their grandchildren at the table next to us who also noticed. The grandfather was sporting a USMC ball cap. His grandson asked him about the gun and they had a polite and positive conversation. This whole event made me curious about OC.

The next event occurred while I was getting a haircut. A young man walked past the window with an AR-15 slung over his shoulder. One of the ladies who cuts hair there asked a general question to everyone present, "What's the deal with this guy anyway?" I asked, "What do you mean?" They said that he walks back and forth, up one side of the street and down the other, carrying his rifle over his shoulder never stopping anywhere to do anything, just walking back and forth. So, my barber called the local PD just to ask what the deal was. He put the phone on speaker so we could all hear. The police said that this particular person does this just trying to get into debates with people about gun rights. He said it was perfectly legal and to just leave the guy alone.

The third event was when I went to Walmart hoping to find some ammo. My timing was perfect, they were just starting to bring out a shipment that they had received. There were already a couple of people waiting, and one was OC'ing.

After these events I started doing a little research and in the process I found OCDO. The posts and legal information that I found made me feel comfortable enough to try OC. The first time I OC'd was at a Walmart on Memorial Day weekend. My father and I were taking my six year old son fishing for his birthday. It was getting warm and I didn't want my sweatshirt on, which was concealing my pistol, so I just took it off, left it in the truck, and walked in to buy my fishing license. No problems or comments whatsoever. I wore it openly the rest of the day. No problems at the boat launch or on the lake. BTW, my son caught his first bass, just a hair under 14". Needless to say, he was pretty excited.

Most recently I OC'd in a local bakery, Menard's, Gander Mountain, and Burger King. We were all over in Menard's, dealing with several employees and interacting with a few fellow customers. No comments about my pistol at all. I'm not even sure anyone noticed it. My dad thought maybe one two people gave a funny look, but I didn't notice. The people, employees and customers, at Burger King were super friendly. It was a very good experience.

Sorry about the long post, but I thought a little background information would be good to include in my first post. I'll try to keep it short the next time. Thank you all for your encouragement and the wealth of information I've found here.

Bike time

Went to Bike Time in downtown Muskegon with the wife and little one. A lot of really nice bikes. Tons of people. Plenty of LEO's. If any body noticed my pistol, they didn't say any thing and I didn't notice any looks. Too many cool bikes to look at. That is until we went to get a bit to eat. We ate at Carmans Cafe. It's a place I make deliveries to for my job. I go there once weekly. I've talked to the owners about open carry there, and they are OK with it. As we where leaving a waitress (who is most always there in the mornings when I make my deliveries, but not our waitress that day) asked me "is that a real gun?" I started laughing and said yes it was real. She then said "is it really?" That, for some reason made me laugh even more, and I said "yes it's real. Why would someone carry a fake gun?" mmmmm, some people.

I OC'd while I took my loving Yooperlady to Big Boy in Bridgeport for lunch today. Many folks glanced at my sidearm yet no one much cared and just went on eating their lunches.

On the way out at the cash register the manager was taking some money out of the register (I'm guessing to make a "drop" so there isn't a lot of cash sitting in the register) and he struck up a very friendly conversation with us because I saw his nametag and mentioned that he and I share the same first names.

So... now all those who say that open carry "scares" people.... chew on this...

I'm standing there wearing my gun in plain sight (and yes he saw it) while the manager has a handful of money and his response is to have a friendly conversation ... and keep right on taking money out of the register. And then!!!!! MY GOD!!! That manager let me pay my bill!!!!! And then he wished a sincere and smiling "Have a good day" to both Yooperlady and I.

I mean... can you imagine the horror of it all?

I've been OCing more and more this summer. All with NO problems what so ever ! Some of the places have been SAM's Club gas station (Muskegon), WalMart (Muskegon), Sec. of State (Muskegon), Tractor Supply (Fremont), BP gas station (Hesperia), various yard sales (Hesperia), and in the neighborhood while walking the dog. I commented to my wife that it lets me know we are making a positive impact when I can go into the Sec. of State office with about 35 other people from all ages and races and sexes, and NOBODY even blinks at the sight of a guy with a handgun on his side !! Lets keep up the good work. Be nice, be respectful, and keeping showing others that we are the good guys and gals !!!

OC'd at JC Penney and got some legal questions from a young African-American employee so handed him an MOC tri-fold and MSP LU#86. OC'd at Moran Chevrolet for an oil change and had one customer ask me if I ever got hassled, and an employee that asked if I had a hard time finding 9mm ammo. The customer was also shocked to find out you could OC if you have a CPL. That is the most interaction I have had because of my OC in months.

Currently OCing at Szots Bar and Grill in Big Rapids, which I imagine is one of those "pistol free zones". Nobody seems to much notice or care. Just ate my chilli and awaiting my burger. Probably go to the LGS and look around a bit. I'll update this when I get home.

ETA: Oc'd at friends apartment, LGS, and Save A Lot with no issues.

Yesterday: OCed at the new Meijer on 8 mile and Woodard in Detroit. The place seemed to be swarming with LEOs, they had two DPD cruisers patrolling the parking lot and one plainclothes LEO standing inside (with his badge around his neck). No problems, no issues.

As I was walking back to my vehicle one middle aged woman asked if I was a LEO. I explained that I wasn't and told her about OC. She has her CPL (I saw it) but kept calling it a CCW. I had to explain the difference. She had heard of "that open carry law" but was unsure if she could OC given that she has a CPL. I gave her a crash course in OC w/CPL and she was grateful for the information.

Still amazes me the number of people who believe that by having a CPL, they may not OC. I had an LGS owner tell me that last week; he said that is what an Ottawa County deputy told him. He had a CPL issued in Saginaw when Michigan was May Issue but let it lapse. Although he OCs at his shop, he told me that being unable to OC after a CPL was issued is what stopped him from getting it.

Good that you and others are there to spread the word.
