Are you making/using a bent washer type lock? I'm using a slim locks and either 1/16 or 5/64 cable in 1x19....slicker than hammered catcrap on a frozen block of dogdung when loaded properly!

now over on VAguntrader you mentioned a problem w/ Conibear/kill traps what am i missing difference wise between them and snares as i assume the snares are locking in and choking the varmit vs crushing it. i understand the difference if you are furtrapping but not for simple varmit/chicken killer removal.

I didn't see his post in VGT Joe, but with snares you can add a dog block that prevents the snare from tightening beyond a point. The Connibears don't have much wiggle room. Either they're not in them or they're dead.

A lot of us that were around in pre body gripping times used drowning locks on leg hold traps for beaver and muskrat.

If you notice my quote over there it includes reference to the laws. I want everyone to be within the realm of the law here in Va regarding any activity that I'm a part of on a regular basis. To use snares, conibears, or any traps here Va there are laws to abide by and it can get confusing when you start using conibears. We also don't want anyone's pet in a conibear as that is a no-win situation. Here's my quote from VaGT when conibears were brought up as a possible solution for the chicken owner. Of course he just wants a solution to his problem...but you don't want to go about it in a wreckless manner either.

" Unless you know what you're doing (regarding laws....ect) please stay away from conibear (killer) style traps."

I'll expand one step further in saying that he had been given solid advice about the cage trap and some type of fishy bait. If a landowner insists on taking care of a problem himself that would be the route I would suggest for him to take so long as he's dealing with something simple like a coon or possum. I would also advise him to be sure and dispatch the animal onsite to avoid issues with "the man". :cuss:

i did notice your quote that's why i figured i'd ask over here for the explanation instead of the other guys thread. when it comes to protecting livestock the three "S" rule is in effect. Shoot Shovel and Shutup. If the burbanites "pet" is killing livestock then oh well too bad whether it gets put down in a conibear or by firearm the result is the same and justified and legal. I understand you are a trapper and there are a bunch of people out there who are anti-trapping in all its forms just like people are anti farming anti hunting etc etc. So i do understand where you are coming from to protect your sport. I will poke a little fun about your high horse though and ask if you ever exceed the speed limit or do you mountain men like my buddy peter nap just walk or ride a mule on a regular basis?

I'm that guy with the white knuckles everytime I have to venture into the city...I drive too close to the speed limit for most folks.

I just noticed your location....I was raised in Elkton. Are there ever any OC meets or dinners in this area?
I had a OC lunch awhile back in C'ville and had a standing invite for folks to join us at IHOP in C'ville on sunday mornings for breaskfast.
However, but the month before the little one arrived we cut IHOP out and haven't been back yet, no one enjoys hearing a newborn/infant crying out in public.

But we can look into seeing if we can get a regular scheduled one setup.
My wife is in tryouts for the Derby Dames and they have matches out at the Fisherville expo, so maybe I'll try to plan a OC lunch/dinner the same day around that area (with some help as i don't know the area).
