Probably the reason you can't carry in a bar is the law makers are there and scared you will shoot their drunk ass.

See, that's the difference between the various states.

Here in the Old Dominion we are not allowed to carry concealed where they serve booze, but there is nothing that says we cannot open carry. Guess our lawmakers were too drunk to understand they left us a loophole when they prohibited ccw near booze.

stay safe.

No credit.

That's a choice you make each time you do not submit your letter of resignation. I notice that you miss few opportunities to parrot BB's party line.

There are WG-10 pipefighters that risk dismissal rather than toe BB's line.

Can't have a firearm at the base--any base, so don't at work. Don't if going up to the local ShopandSave or W-Mart. Do when going into town. Always when traveling. What I carry depends on where I'm going. Most parts of COS, the Bersa Mini-9--14 rounds of 115 gr HST +P, or the M-85 snubbie with GD 135g +Ps. Some parts, one of the SIG GSRS, 230gr +P HSTs. Good compromise for anywhere: Hi-Power, 124gr +P+ HSTs.

Who is "BB"? Big Brother? I'm not sure that serving your country and taking the oath, military or civilian--or both for some of us, to support and defend the constitution is serving 'BB.' Part of that constitution is why this forum exists--and you can post here. But then, we've had this discussion before, haven't we?

Your poll is flawed. You ask "How often do you carry?" which is a numbers questions. But the poll options aren't numbers based. "Only when I feel the need to" can easily be the same as "All the time, no questions asked" or it could be "I rarely ever carry a gun" because I rarely "feel the need to".

The poll options should have been something like:

7 days a week
3 to 5 days a week
2 days a week
never

That is a very good point. I never thought of it that way. I don't know how to change the poll option though.

This...

Well, it's not illegal where I live, but since I don't have a CHP, I can't carry at my school.

Yes but, I sometimes only leave the house once or twice a week. Sometimes I go out everyday of the week.

Last week, I picked up a pretty nasty cold from when whatever storm that was came through, so I stayed home most of the week. Should I pick "never", then?

I carry all the time. From the time I put my pants on anyway... Part of gettin' dressed. Then... depends on ifI can carry it 'inside' wherever or not. I will if not otherwise prohibited.... like bars.

I have been for quite a while now of the opinion that you make a decision to carry or not. If you carry, carry all the time whenever you are legally able. I had this opinion reinforced about a week ago.

I got home from work and was going to the gym about a mile from my house. I was going straight there and straight back and there isn't any bad neighborhood or high threat area in between. I decided to leave my sidearm at home rather than in my car at the gym as usual. At the gym I ran into a buddy who wanted to go to an event later that night that required I have cash which meant I needed to stop by the ATM on the way home. And there I regretted my decision.

As I am finishing at the ATM an older model, not great condition car pulls up behind me, so close that I can't see their headlights, with 2 men in the front seat. As I take my cash their passenger door opens and a guy starts getting out. I shove my cash and card in the cup holder and pull up in the ATM lane (curbs on both sides) to let them up to the ATM. As I stop, the car passes the ATM without pausing and pulls up behind me again. I quite putting away my stuff and pull around going out the entrance and the other car follows me. I get to the street where there is a lot of cross traffic and the car pulls up behind me again, so close again I cannot see headlights and the passenger starts to get out again. Out of habit I reach into the center console where I have nothing but a few CDs and a flashlight. Dammit! As the passenger starts walking around his door towards me there is just enough break in traffic for me to pull out to the right if I gun it which I do. The next day a neighbor tells me of a recent hold-up at a local ATM that went down similar to what I experienced.

Now those guys may have been just planning to ask for directions. I checked my tail lights the next day in case they were innocently going to tell me of a burned out bulb or some such thing. I can find no definitive innocent reason for their behavior. Now it may have been nothing, but it may have been something. The important lesson for me was that I was not armed to defend myself.

Now would I have done anything different if I had been armed? No. I would still have tried to get away from the situation but I probably would not have pulled out in traffic so short risking an accident. But if I had been in the fiancee's SUV rather than my sports car I would not have been able to pull out in the gap available and there was lots of traffic coming both ways as lights on both sides of my location had just gone green. I know I would have felt a lot better if I had been armed and a lot more secure in my knowledge of being able to defend myself if something had happened. As it was, I was essentially a sitting duck because of my own choice earlier that night to leave my sidearm on my dresser.

Don't have it strapped on me while I'm at work, but it sleeps in the car just fine. I make sure to park a ways out though -- I'd rather not ruffle feathers when I don't have to. (I really do need to find my handbook and see what's allowed, but I think they're pretty reasonable).

Outside of work, it's on my hip. OC a full-size stainless 9mm. It's kinda fun :)

Most people don't even pay attention enough to realize its there (or they just pretend it's not, which is the same thing to me).

I carry 24/7.Atwork, I keep a pistol on my side and usually have on in my saddle bag. My students know that there's one in the saddle bag just in case they get out and need it on their solo ride. It's the kind of thing that is there and you hope they never need. I always teach them firearms safety as part of their riding lesson.
