Depends on which kind of BBQ you like, eastern or western NC style. If eastern (thinner, vinegar based sauce), then yes, feel free to bitch. If western (thicker, sweeter junk), then no....you gave up that right and should be making plans to move back to some yankee state by this weekend
I grew up eating western NC BBQ and I can tell you that the dipping sauce is made from water and vinegar with a little ketchup, molasses or brown sugar and red pepper flakes. It is not thick at all, as it is mostly water, and is often not put on the meat unless you want it (the meat speaks for itself). The slaw is made with finely chopped cabbage, a little green and red bell pepper (mainly to add a little color) marinated for a few days in the same basic concoction as the dipping sauce and is usually enough to season the meat if you are making a sandwich. Where I grew up, we called that type of slaw "fish camp slaw" because it was common at most local seafood resturants. If you can find George's Original Barbeque Sauce and add just enough molasses to top off the bottle you will have you some good dipping sauce.
