I had to do some business in town (Pascagoula)today and decided to eat at the Annex restaurant because I knew they would have catfish on the menu.
Anyway, when I went to leave, I saw a couple uniformed officers and after I paid my tab, one of them, seeing my sidearm,asked mewhat I did for a living, I said I am a owner of a one man trucking company ie; owner/operator. He asked if I carry that gun in a commercial vehicle and I said yes I do, then he told me he thinks that is illegal, I ask him to clarify and he said clearly that he thinks it is illegal to carry a firearm in a commercial vehicle.
Well, so far the conversation was going good, the officer was still seated enjoying his lunch and beings I had somewhere to go I said politely;"Look, I haven't found anywhere on the books where it is illegal to carry in a commercial vehicle...Ya'll have a nice day!" and did the little 'good-by wave' andI started for the door. I figured if he wanted to detain me, he would stop me, but he didn't, but I didn't ask if I was being detained either.
Now for those of you who are not familiar with the Annex restaurant, it is a very popular eatery that fills up in a hurry during lunch and they have a tiny parking area, so I had to park across the road and was expecting anytime for the officer to come up behind me but he never did.
Ok, so far so good. I get in my old p/u and while pulling out I see the deputy out walking around like he was looking for someone, he looks directly at me and I do the 'steering-wheel-wave' you know, waving but ot letting go of the wheel, anyway, the deputy acts like he didn't see me and then turns around and walks off while talking on his handheld radio. At this point, I realize the he probably was looking for a commercial vehicle and not expecting to see me in a regular vehicle,and I go on.
I leave the restaurant and head for Walmart, buy what I need there then head back in town to the courthouse. Well, the courthouse is in the same building as the sheriffs dept and guess who is sitting on a bench outside when I walk up, yep you guessed it, the deputy from the restaurant and one other uniformed officer, I am not sure what departmentthe other guy was with as his uniform was white and I think all JCSO deputies where black.
I get ready to step through the door and the deputy says "Hey buddy, hold up a minute...Where's your gun you had on your side?" pointing to my empty holster. I said "It is in the truck, it is illegal for me to carry inside this building."
He then turns to the other guy and says "This is the guy I was telling you about that wasat theAnnexand is a trucker and carries his gun in his commercial vehicle." The other officer says "Oh yea, it is completely legal for him to carry in a commercial vehicle because MS consideres it an extension of your home etc, etc. They passed that law a while back."
So I stand outside for a minute or two and we discuss where citizens like myself can or cannot carry such as buildings with courthouses, post offices, parks, etc. but finally I tell them i need to go on in and they both said to have a nice day.
So, during all this time, not once was I asked to show my Firearms Permit nor was I told that I couldn't carry in the open, actually OC never came up in the conversation...I am liking where I live more and more
