Our open carry group has met a few times at the Golden Corral in West Valley, Utah. I was there at least twice, but I seem to recall the group met there before the first time I did. The management was very cordial to us, and invited us back. The group of us are scattered from heck to breakfast along the Wasatch front, probably 175 miles from one end to the other (and a few people a lot farther away than that), so the get-togethers get held at various places so some don't have to travel so far each time. Most places have been glad to have us schedule our dinners at their facilities.

There was an incident at the Golden Corral in Dothan, Alabama in which one of our members was royally hassled by a group of cops. They unlawfully seized his pistol and his permit. After a lot of trouble and a long time, they were returned sans one bullet.

The Golden Corral itself had zero problem. Not one customer had a problem or complained. An undercover cop saw the member OCing and called it in.

This incident should sharply illustrate that Golden Corral does not have a corporate policy against carry--or the restaurant in this case would've come down on the officer's side instead of making it clear to the OCer that they had nothing to do with the MWAG call.

And he didn't file armed robbery against them?

That is what happened when he did not get ALL of his property returned. And under most state laws it is an enhanced charge (+ 1 level) because it was under color of authority.

I wouldn't expect a DA to actually prosecute, but it would get some attention.

Before I call the locals, I will see what I can get from corporate first that pertains to Ohio.

I will post whatever I get back.

It may be an Ohio thing.

I want to thank the OP for starting this thread & wish I had seen it sooner, I love their food!

(I'll get the names of who I talk to etc. & see if we can't get Ohio on board)

After finding this thread & contacting Corporate thru the corporate link on line I received a couple e-mails back.

Below I am posting what I sent and what I received.

PAY SPECIAL ATTN to the fact that before Mr. Sptiz e-mailed me, he had been advised from Rick Trant to talk to me and do the best he can because this issue is a delicate issue with the people in Ohio.

ONCE I TALK TO MR. SPITZ I will tell everyone how the conversation went, HOWEVER judgeing by the e-mails they plan on leaving the signs up, but we will see.....

To Whom it may concern, Please allow me to introduce my self, my name is Don (deleted) from Newark Ohio. I am also the founder of Licking County Open Carry Club and a member of opencarry.org and NRA. It was recently posted on opencarry.org that Golden Corrals corporate policy regarding firearms is to allow whatever state law allows. In Ohio we have open and concealed carry of firearms for law abiding citizens. Upon my last visits to Golden Corral with my family in Zanesville and Reynoldsburg I had to disarm as the entry door was posted with a No Weapons sign. Can you please clarify the corporate policy for me? If the policy is to follow state law, can we expect the signs to be removed? Myself and others enjoy taking our families to your restaurants and we eagerly await your response. Thank you, Don (deleted)

I know the Golden Corral in the Hermitage in Tennessee allows open carry. There were several open carrying there Tuesday when Republican gubernatorial candidate showed up for a stump speech and promised to sign "constitutional carry" legislation if sent to him.

Well, after several e-mails & a couple phone calls it seems there is no blanket policy for GC because some are corporate owned & others are franchised. Thats why here in Ohio some are posted & some are not.

As for the one I was trying to take down the sign, I got bounced around and finally kicked back to the local manager who made it clear he had no authority nor interest in changing the policy and I never got a return phone call from their owners out of North Carolina (Platinum Corral).

Conclusion: Some are posted, some are not. They have the right to post & we have the right to decide to support them with our business or not.

Luckily there are plenty of other good places to eat close to me where I can carry, so I'll just take my family elsewhere.

So did we discover or affirm what the "corporate" policy is?

If the corporate policy is to allow OC, then this would be the opposite of what happened to the (now bankrupt) Fuddruckers chain, where corporate said "no", but some franchisees allowed it.

Most of the time a Franchisee has to agree to abide by all corporate policies in order to be allowed to use the corporate name. So Mr. Spitz saying that it makes a difference one way or another doesn't make any since. (just my .02)
