I wasn't sure this was justified when the story first broke, but from the evidence it seems like a clear cut case of self defense. It's also a great example of why you DO need a gun in places alcohol is served, and why having a drink shouldn't force you to disarm. Most people can have a few drinks without losing their faculties, and it's the carrier's responsibility to know his limit. It appears Ung did everything he could have done correctly.

Now who's going to compensate Ung for locking him up and forcing him to drop out of law school? That should be his lawyer's next priority. But sadly he probably will never see a penny in compensation or an apology from anybody. An all too real example of how even a justified shooting can completely screw up your life.

Regarding an earlier comment about the weapon being a .380.....the attacker was stopped. Ung emptied the gun, but the attacker also received serious wounds. The attacker dropped quickly but not instantaneously. This is all that anybody can expect from a handgun of any caliber.

The fact that the cartridges were Federal means they were probably hollowpoints. Even the "sub-standard" penetration of .380 HPs was enough to reach this guy's spine from a frontal shot. He is a paraplegic and needs a machine to help him take a dump for the rest of his life.

I believe this unfortunate incident proves that a .380 will serve, if necessary.

That limp may serve to remind him for the remainder of his days why you don't use your legs (or any other part) to attack someone who is not atacking you or someone else.

** Years down the line** Grandpa why do you walk with a limp? Because as a young man I hadn't yet learned that you don't go around attacking people and another young man taught me and my friends a very valuable lesson. May you learn from it and never have to worry about a limp like mine.
