Is detaining someone unlawfully at gunpoint, especially with a gun that the "officer" has not qualified with, a crime in itself?

If I knew of someone that this happened to, I'd be inclined to assist with a monetary contribution to a lawyer willing to go after them.
Danbus got $10,000 for that in Norfolk about a year ago.

I'm willing to assist someone monetarily without regard to any financial consideration. I would help if this, being detained unlawfully at gunpoint, were to happen to someone I knew or might come to know. I don't really want to contribute to a defense fund. Rather to a specific civil/criminal suit against the individual thugs. And where the victim had received counsel and advice. There has to be a way to lawfully accomplish this.
