I live in Washington and I am planning on visiting Oregon in August to view the eclipse. How can I legally carry a gun with me?
I expect to drive there in my pickup and at some point get out of my pu to view the eclipse.
Since I don't have an Oregon carry permit I don't know how or if I can ever carry my pistol.
Some advise would be greatly appreciated.

Oregon does not appear to have reciprocity with Washington in regards to state permits per Washington Attorney General's Office.

  • Carry permits are required for either handguns or long guns per ORS 166.291
  • Carrying of a concealed firearm is prohibited by ORS 166.250, however holders of a valid Oregon Concealed Handgun License are exempt from this law per ORS 166.260.

Oregon appears to be a 'non reciprocating state' according to the map at the bottom of this page

Wish I had better news for you :(

Open carry is legal in Oregon even without an Oregon Concealed Handgun License, per OpenCarry.com. Oregon does not appear to have statewide preemption however, so there may be a patchwork of regulations that you may unwittingly run afoul of.

I was planning to enter Oregon on either I-5 or I-205 and go about 50 miles south to a rest area. Then watch the eclipse from there and then return home.

If I understand you then I can OC while doing that.

I wouldn't put too much trust in that little basket :). All I know is what little I gleaned from a bit of online research and I have no idea what regulations may be in force wherever that rest area might be. It may even be a prohibited area according to the local township, I dunno.

In case you haven't already, suggest you visit handgunlaw.us - OREGON - skip down to CARRY IN STATE PARKS/WMA/ROAD SIDE REST AREAS & ST. NAT. FORRESTS - Read all to end of document.
