It is my understanding that as of January 1st Alabama has joined the ranks of states who have eliminated the permit requirement to carry a firearm either openly or concealed by nonprohibited people. Some call it Constitutional Carry. While I believe it is a big step forward, I feel that there are still too many restrictions placed on the carrying of firearms. Would love for somebody more knowledgeable of the law than me to break down in layman's terms just what this new bill actually accomplishes, and what it doesn't. The good news is that the streets are not flowing with blood and things seem to be pretty much normal. Also when are the maps going to be updated?

Probably the major accomplishment was the elimination of the necessity of having a permit to carry in (or on) one's vehicle. That particular law's latest incarnation was from the beginnings of the Civil Rights era; most notably the Montgomery Bus Boycott. It was a large step, as evidenced by the hypocritical crying of the Alabama Sheriffs' Association. They used every excuse in the book for this legislation not to pass before finally admitting that the loss of revenue was really their major issue.
